If not, I hope someone will direct me the a more appropriate forum. My mother purchased a Commodore Plus/4 several years ago and a disk drive last year. She's finally decided that she needs a printer, too, and can't find anything she's really willing to spend the money on. I'm familiar with CP/M machines and IBM compatibles (Boo!! Hiss!! I'm with you there) but not the Commodore line. I'd be inclined to go with an Epson, Panasonic, or similar printer but don't know if they're compatible or not. Sears has an interface module that apparently goes with the Okimate line of printers but it runs $80 -- not including the printer, of course. That seems a bit steep to me. Is anything else available? Can anyone suggest a vendor, mail order or otherwise? What is available and/or necessary to hook a Plus/4 to a printer? Is it worth bothering or should we bite the bullet and get a different machine? Thanks in advance, Jim ------------ Category 1, Topic 16 Message 2 Mon Nov 06, 1989 HORO [ SysOp ] at 23:39 EST I'm not all that familiar with the Plus/4, but if it's like the other Commodore computers, once you have an interface, you can use any printer that any other computer (CP/M, MS-DOS, etc.) can use. That's what the interface does ... converts the "oddball" Commodore output to standard ASCII, that the printers expect. Most interfaces add some extra features, including the ability to emulate a Commodore printer, print graphics, change fonts, etc. Panasonic and Epson are both good choices. You may also want to look at the Star line, which includes a couple of color printers. Star also makes some Commodore compatible printers, but I don't know if the Plus/4 uses the same interface scheme as the 64/128 do. I got my printer from Lyco, a big mail order house that advertises in most of the mags, Commodore "real-world" ... definitely in Computer Shopper, if nowhere else. They have a pretty good tech support line, and a toll free number. If you can't find one of their ads, call 800 directory assistance. Let us know what you find out ... others could probably use this information too. ------------ ************ Topic 2 Thu Nov 02, 1989 J.ZIELINSKY1 [Mr. Neutron] at 20:36 EST Sub: RTC times&dates I have a question: Why aren't the rtc's active more often? 4 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 2, Topic 2 Message 1 Thu Nov 02, 1989 J.ZIELINSKY1 [Mr. Neutron] at 20:42 EST I want to know why the RTC's aren't full more often. I have been unable to change the filetype from SEQ to PRG, although what has surprised me was that if I downloaded the file as a normal program: LOAD "FILENAME,S",8,1 it would load and run as a perfectly normal program, and I don't know why! When the filetype is selected on the menu as SEQ or PRG, it will save as SEQ regardless of what is selected. Thank you for any help that is provided. Ed ------------ Category 4, Topic 6 Message 2 Tue Nov 07, 1989 DO-RAE-MI [Ted] at 00:18 EST ß=¦ß= Š Ed, It's possible to avoid the Xmodem bug in that family of terminal programs. When the program asks you to type in the name you wish to give the file, type: filename,p,w then hit return and select program at the menu. It will obediently download the file as a program file. I haven't had occasion to test the problem with as user file, but I expect the same sort of bug fix will work. The program itself is ok. The only thing that needs to be changed is the little marker on the disk directory that says "seq" to the system. I do that with the monitor in my Fastload cartridge if I had my attack o absentmindedness when downloading to a 1541 disk. Any good monitor will do the job. Sequential files display as $81 or 81 or 129 and appear as the third number representing information when the directory is displayed to screen. Program files display as $82 or 82 or 129. Unless you are experienced and have just that file on a disk, a monitor is probably not the way to go. A mistake can make the data on the disk inaccessible or destroy it. Some of the fancier disk directory utilities allow similar type changes on the directory. If I have downloaded to 1581, I scratch the file, then load and run 1581Unscratch from the Commodore RT library. I unscratch the file and select "program" from the file type option menu. The file is reincarnated as a program file. This of course works only if you haven't saved something to disk after scratching the sequential file. My friend Laszlo just bought a Magnavox monochrome, model #7622, which has an 80 col capability, and needs a cable which will let him hook it up to the 128 that way. He tells me that the Magnavox has only an RCA port with holes for 2 jacks--one for video and one for audio. What we conclude is that he needs an RGBI cable, with a DB9 connector at the 128 side and an RCA connector, or jack, at the monitor side. Is this correct? And if so, where does one obtain such a cable? Is it easily procured? Would Radio Shack have such a thing? Or does it have to be custom-built? Is it possible to jury-rig it if not readily obtainable? Hopefully you can help! Jeff ------------ Category 11, Topic 41 Message 6 Fri Nov 10, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 22:40 PST Jeff, As promised, I'm back. Here's my opinion. The most common way to "Pop" up a screen is to switch the location of screen memory from its normal location beginning at 1024 to some other area which has already been pre-loaded with the appropriate info. Sprite pointers are also located in this block and will move/change too. The VIC is not the only chip which has control of this situation. CIA 2 controls the bank selection used by the VIC to find screen memory. Normally, CIA 1 and 2 are not soldered in place and may be swapped with relative ease. If you want to try this and are not sure of the chip locations, etc, search ß=2ß= Šthe software library using my mail address as shown above as a key.
