Even if the WERE the most congenial entity to deal with [and they're not] how many machinews s have they promised but not delivered. The 128 is great and I have one, but it is not as easy to program as the 64 was. They went so far out of their way to make BASIC great that they made ml harder. I do feel for them in a way. The other problem is that it always kicks into single-sided mode. I refuses to read the disks in double-sided mode. The drive is rather old and has the old ROMs in it. My side 2 head did die ... (older 1571, with upgraded ROM) ... After 3 months in the Video store-cum-repair shop, I paid $125 to get the whole drive mechanism replaced. I don't think the tech actually knew which end of the soldering iron to hold, so he just did a swap. My understanding, from an article by Robert (?) Vanderpool in the NYOUG (NY Osborne User Group) newsletter, is that heat sometimes causes the flat springy piece of metal that holds the head in place to flex. He had a 2 part article detailing his trials and tribulations in getting it repaired; I only saw part I. My symptoms made it obvious that the second head (which is physically on top, BTW) had failed ... Complete inability to format the second side of the disk, and "664 blocks free" even on disks that had been formatted DS. Wish I could tell you how much it *should* cost, but I really think I overpaid. If you have an unmodified copy of the FastTrak Boot disk, try rebooting the system using it and see if SCSItools can recognize the drive. Did the SCSItools program give you an error when it tried to scan for drives? Such as 'harddisk.device not found? If so the Expansion drawer may have also been modified. Either of theseof these will cause this problem. If booting form the FastTrak floppy and using the utilities there recognizes the drive and the partitions, then you will need to run the MakeAutoBoot program again to reinstall a working startup script and then go and re-edit it. If the floppy utilities do not recognise a drive then it sounds like a hardware problem, like the drive is no longer respresponding correctly. Check all the connections again, and check the FastCard without the drive connected to see if it allows you to boot from the floppy. Also, if possible, try another drive with the FastCard, if one is available. ------------ ************ Topic 1 Wed Aug 16, 1989 C128-BILL [SYSOP] at 20:13 EDT Sub: Welcome to the FlagShip, C.M.D. !! I am a happy owner of a JiffyDOS set for my 128, 1571 and 1581. I seem to remember seeing something about an incompatability with the 1581 Toolkit and a subsequent upgrade of the JiffyDOS. Could you fill in the details? ------------ Category 21, Topic 4 Message 2 Tue Aug 22, 1989 D.RAY1 [Dale] at 00:37 EDT CMD has revised the 1581 ROM. The new revision should work with the 1581 Toolkit and some other software that previously had compatibility problems. Ted has the new ROM, hey Ted! how's it working? ------------ Category 21, Topic 4 Message 3 Mon Aug 21, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 21:46 PDT Is the upgrade available to previous (older version) owners, and how does one obtain it if it is? ------------ Category 21, Topic 4 Message 4 Thu Aug 24, 1989 D.RAY1 [Dale] at 04:30 EDT The latest version of the Jiffy DOS 1581 ROM is available for $10 as an upgrade.
