Anybody have any contributions? 3 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 11, Topic 23 Message 3 Thu Aug 17, 1989 H.HERMAN1 at 06:33 EDT I would think using the REU as a print buffer would be defeating its purpose, since unless you could write a routine, such as exists for the Unix sys, and some others, and "spool" the printer, while you are doing another task, nothing is gained. On the other hand, a seperate print buffer, once the 'puter has filled it, "spools" out the stuff to the printer, and you are free to use the 128 or 64 for another task, while printing goes on. This _INCLUDES_ read/writes to disk, even tho the printer is also using the serial connection. I have two printers, each with its own Brachman 64k print buffer, one is Commodore's MPS-1000, and the other is an Epson, with Centronics connection. I am able to dump printing to the two buffers, and have the two printers working, while doing a third task with the 128, which would otherwise be tied up doing printing, without the buffers. It is really a time saver, since the 128 can dump to the printer buffer a lot faster than the printer can accept stuff. With only a few exceptions, such as mail lists that run over 1,300+ names, the 64k buffers are large enough to hold most dumps. [When the buffer does get full, then the 128 doles out its printing to the buffer, at the rate the printer prints, since the buffer can only accept new stuff as it dumps out the old. The few times a print job is this large doesn't warrrant the additional expense of a larger buffer, and the time for at least 64k of the dump has been saved.] It is almost a necessity when doing NLQ printing. You can find out if the Brachman buffer is still available by contacting them at: R. J. Brachman Associates, Inc., 600 Upland Avenue, Upland PA 19015. Their telephone: 215-499-7475. If you can get your hands on one of them, don't hesitate. It's a terrific product! If requested, they will even custom the box to default to print device #5, so two can run without additional software input. I've had one for three years, the second for two, and both have had thousands of hours of use, and never a prob. On the same subject of buffers, and interfaces, you may want to consider making yourself an "interrupt" or re-set push button box, so that when required, you can do printer re-sets, without having to use the 128's re-set button, which would otherwise disturb whatever is in the 128's memory. [Some interfaces come with a re-set already installed, but others don't.] This is especially useful when changing progams a lot, and going by software from 128 to CP/M, and vice versa. One of the printers doesn't seem to like this at times, and just doing a printer re-set instead of a sys re-set solves the prob. For the do-it-yourselfer, parts can be purchased from Radio Shack for about $4. This all is probably more than you wanted or cared to know, so I'll close out here.
