I need help on this subject from anyone who has any experience in this area whatsoever. inten time & effort in maintenance. End of Message. ------------ Category 1, Topic 14 Message 2 Tue Sep 05, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 21:29 PDT A lot depends on the printer. Most printers are designed to work with interfaces of 16 or 8 bits. However, is there an interface for the C64 available that supports a 24 pin printer? Sorry, I don't know of one. All of the 24 pin types I know of will work with the Centronics parallel interface. ------------ Category 1, Topic 14 Message 3 Wed Sep 06, 1989 H.HERMAN1 at 07:00 EDT B.Bhan, _ALL_ 24 pin printers will work fine with either the 64 or 128, so long as you use any of the print styles offered by the printer. In fact, all of the print styles offered by the printer are available to you! Where you probably will have a prob is in printing out graphics. Most 64 and 128 graphics programs expect 8 or 9 pins, and unless they offer an option for modification, or you can figure a way to fill in empty spaces, graphics will probably come out sorta weird. This also applies to software-generated graphic characters, such as those in some of the printer inter-faces. So, if you are wiling to limit yourself to the printer's internal characters, and the multiple variations avaliable from them, you will get some letter quality print out of most of the 24 pin printers. I'd suggest if you haven't bought one yet, that you take a look at Epson's LQ-500. It's a 24 pin that used to sell at $850, and is now available for around $290. In the interest of scientific progress (increasing the amount of methane produced from the decompositionof garbage which certain dumps sell as fuel), some research is being done into garbage. Digging into the dumps has produced some surprising results. Contrary to what one might expect, perfectly preserved hotdogs & pastries have been found at 20 year levels (90 feet down). Also found: green grass clippings and perfectly readable newspapers. Contrary to the claims of How-Awful-It-Is Set, only about .25% of the garbage was composed of FastFood packaging--10% was predicted-- and disposable diapers were 1% (not 5% of the garbage. While the biodegradables were still fresh & new, specimens of plastic had degraded 50% over the 20 years in the dump. It's a strange world...biodegradable doesn't and eternal plastic disappears. Can you tell my the problem or do I have a messed up c128 = thanks Rich ------------ Category 11, Topic 34 Message 3 Mon Sep 04, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 00:52 PDT Richard, I hope you don't mind my sharing the problem(s) you're having with the rest of the world! I think you MAY have two problems: (1) the popping noises and (2) the garbled characters. Let me see if I might help you track this down. To do this I will need your help. I have a few questions which will help me narrow down what is going on with your new computer. (1) Unplug everything from the TV you're useing and turn it on. Does it still make the same popping noises? (2) Is this really a TV or are you using a monitor? If the answer is monitor, which one? (3) Do you understand peeks and pokes? The answers to these questions will give me a solid starting point to help you out. At this point, with no other info, I expect the problem is in the TV, but I would like to narrow it down a bit before offering specific advice. I am online in the Real Time Conference (room 6) a fair number of evenings. Sorry, there is no schedule of when I'm there yet. I'm trying to get organized so I can be there at least one or two nights each week to help out. There are three routines to get you started: SetColorMode = $C2F5 ColorCard = $C2F8 ColorRectangle = $C2FB SetColorMode changes the VDC mode. Pass the mode number (0-4) in A as follows: 0 - monochrome 1 - 176 x 640 8x8 color 2 - 200 x 640 8x8 color (req 64K VDC RAM) 3 - " " 8x4 color ( " " " " ) 4 - " " 8x2 color ( " " " " ) Only the mode is changed, you'll have to clear the screen and attributes (which begin at $3880 BTW) yourself. Geos doesn't know diddily about 176 x 640 so if you are in this mode don't draw past 175 and don't let the mouse go down there either. I've never used ColorCard and I don't remember the parameters, disassemble it and look if you need it. ColorRectangle gets the same parameters as Rectangle. -WC ------------ Category 19, Topic 39 Message 7 Sun Sep 03, 1989 N.L.WILLIAMS [Cpt Nathan] at 09:08 CDT Thanks I'll look into it.
