It grew out of a very messy tax code, substantial inequality and the Enlightenment: the belief that Reason was the proper guide and the assumption implicit in that belief that people's right reason would end up at the same place. Of course, it doesn't. People have passions and loyalties, different interests and different rational conclutions. They fight about them...which brings us to the Terror. As Margaret Thatcher (the British always seem to need to say something nasty about the French who seem compelled to return the favor) noted the French Revolution produced a large quantity of headless corpses and ended with a Dictator. Very few important leaders survived the Terror--Tallyrand was one and the head of the secret service was another... which tells one something about revolutions. However, a revolution by it's very natures is a massive change. Sooner or later the changes they establish are ratified in blood. The Terror was in that sence not an unusual result of a revolution. Winners execute loser, political opponents (they aren't true believers in the revolution), and a lot of innocent bystanders. The Glorious Revolution in England in 1689 was in it's initiation relatively bloodless. A Catholic King's second wife had produced a son, thereby ensuring a Catholic crown in a Protestant country. With the memory of the religious wars beginning with the Reformation clearly in their minds, the bishops of the church of England, substantial portions of the nobility and the merchants of London invited William of Orange, the king's protestant son in law to take the crown. William arrived with his army and approved a series of laws passed by Parliament which, with the Magna Charta extorted from King John at sword's point at Runnymede, form the foundation of the Rights of Englishmen which the American Founding Fathers fought another revolution to retain. Tolerance of dissenting protestants, annual appropriations budgets, regular elections, and the free debate of public policy grew out o the Glorious Revolution. Although, it is portrayed often as bloodless, it wasn't. The Stuart dynasty and it's adherents made repeated attempts to dislodge that Revolution. Very bloody attempts on both sides. The American Founders fought a long and bloody war to retain the rights of Englishmen at the cost of being Englishmen no more. Many of the camp followers of the American & British armies were the families of soldiers fighting the war. It wasn't safe to remain at home. One's politics could be a death sentence at the hands of one's neighbors just as easily as a passing army. After the war, the losing Tories for the most part left. It's a lot easier to avoid mass executions for cause or hysteria if there is obviously no particular threat. France's "losers" didn't leave. And the relations of the losers in foreign lands might well send assistance (armies). Some of the losers were indeed plotting to overthrow the revolution. Hence, the first sort of executions: for cause. But soon, anyone who disagreed was an enemy of the state and in the political hysteria, the corpses mentiond by Mrs. Thatcher were produced. Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. Three things the French Revolution strove for...things that are not easily obtained or maintained...things that must be paid for capriciously, generation by generation in broken bones and spilled blood. Somebody(ies) alwasy think they know best--they are not equal, they are better--and therefore YOU little person should not be free. In the Terror and subsequent political upheavals, the French Revolution paid it's dues. They weren't pretty. Dues never are. They disturb many French people today, as well they should disturb decent thinking people. That should not detract from the present or from the goal of the revolution: liberty, equality, fraternity...a self governing polity embracing a society which respects individual's liberties, a society in which decent people can live in reasonable peace together, a society in which individuals have a reasonable opportunity to exercise their liberties. NO society is perfect, but the 5th Republic does fall in that general catagory. Striving for that, attaining that much--That is surely something well worth celebrating. Nothing will touch the QBB if its Aprospand slot is turned off. Can you try loading BBR again with the QBB slot turned off. Check the QBB contents when you've finished and I think everything will be fine. I suspect that BBR uses some high memory that overlies the QBB and it accidentally called one of the QBB subroutines and messed up the contents as a result. That kind of accident doesn't happen very often because the QBB's memory bank is normally used only by external ROMs (cartridges) but BBR may be doing some odd things. The best procedure when you find a problem like this is simply to turn off the QBB slot until the offending software has finished it's job. We'll just have to compile a list of the programs that cause problems and take precautions before we use them. I think it'll be a short list. ------------ Category 18, Topic 11 Message 14 Fri Jul 14, 1989 QBB.B at 02:50 EDT Horo, the QBB doesn't do much vector manipulation. We don't (currently) attempt a DOS emulation. The problem with programs like BTP is more likely to be the degree to which it's protected. If it's unprotected, we simply read it into the cartridge for storage...then when it's needed we pop it out into computer memory and run it...very simple, very fast, and very easy. I think I have had BTP in my cartridge, but it may have been a frozen C64 version. I'll have to look at it again. For once, I can actually see 80 columns of text in 40 column mode!! Incredible! Suggestion for future versions: Have an option, when the user saves ASCII text to the buffer, the program can convert it into a GeoWrite file, so it can be sent to the printer. Thanks again for a job well done! Ed ------------ Category 19, Topic 3 Message 32 Tue Jul 11, 1989 WC.COLEMAN [GeoOp] at 21:24 EDT There are many things I've been considering for the V3 series, saving/reading geoWrite files is on the list. Unfortunaly as with most things I can only do so much in the alloted time. When RUN gives me the go ahead for another version (cross your fingers) I'll put as many options in as I can and still ensure that what I add is properly debugged. -WC ------------ Category 19, Topic 3 Message 33 Wed Jul 12, 1989 R.ROMINE1 at 00:37 CDT A NEW version!?! That would be terrific! GeoTerm 2.0 is one of the best Term prgs on the market! The only addition I would like to see is VT52 emulation. *s ------------ ************ Topic 15 Mon Apr 18, 1988 J.KIRKPATRIC [Big Jim] (Forwarded) Sub: How do we get MJ's programs? I tried something very similar, but had problem when the variables were larger than 255. (I think that was the limit.) Is there any way to do division and multiplication on larger numbers in the 6502 environment? It must be possible because the formula works in BASIC, but no one seems to know how. I'll try your suggestion to be sure, but if ANYONE knows the answer to this, it would be greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks again. ----====> Belgarion <====---- ------------ Category 19, Topic 22 Message 25 Mon Jul 10, 1989 WC.COLEMAN [GeoOp] at 03:38 EDT Dmult, Bmult, and Ddiv all return word length numbers (0-65535). As I recall I had a problem with Ddiv (wrong answer) that I fixed be reversing variables passed in X and Y (just remember that the answer will always be in the variable pointed to by X. Check your code carefully, it's real easy to make simple errors that screw up the answers (take it from one who knows from experience!). These routines DO work - I use them quite a bit. BTW, remember that there are THREE multiplies to choose from - BBMult (byte*byte=word), BMult (word*byte=word), and DMult (word*word=word). If you use the wrong one the answer will probably be hosed. -WC ------------ ************ Topic 35 Fri Jan 22, 1988 D.KARON (Forwarded) Sub: Geos Printers Why doesn't my printer work with Geos 17 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 19, Topic 35 Message 17 Thu Jul 13, 1989 V.THOMAS1 at 19:12 EDT Has anyone out there used LASERMATRIX yet?
