The diskette contains a highly destructive Trojan Horse. The Chase Manhattan Bank and ICL Computers were the first to report problems with the software. Systems that ran the enclosed programs had all data on the hard disks destroyed. Hundreds of systems were affected. Other reports have come in from user groups, small businesses and individuals with similar problems. The professionally prepared documentation that comes with the diskette purports that the software provides a data base of AIDS information. The flyer heading reads - "AIDS Information - An Introductory Diskette". If the software is installed using the included INSTALL program, the first thing that the program does is print out an invoice for the software. Then, after the system is re-booted a random number of times the system self destructs. Whoever has perpetrated this monstrosity has gone to a great deal of time, and more expense, and they have clearly perpetrated the largest single targeting of destructive code yet reported. The mailings are professionally done, and the style of the mailing labels indicate the lists were purchased from professional mailing organizations. The estimated costs for printing, diskette, label and mailing is over $3.00 per package. The volume of reports imply that many thousands may have been mailed. In addition, the British magazine "PC Business World" has included a copy of the diskette with its most recent publication - another expensive avenue of distribution. The only indication of who the perpetrator(s) may be is the address on the invoice to which they ask that $378.00 be mailed: PC Cyborg Corporation P.O. Box 871744 Panama 7, Panama Needless to say, a check for a registered PC Cyborg Corporation in Panama turned up negative. Also the interface which plugs into the cartridge port is crucial to making any BBS work with a particular drive. Also there are some future releases of the same type interface that kill off the operation of the BBS whereby the older releases of the same interface hardware/dos/chips let everything work fine. MY recommendation having used 1541's/SFD's/LT Kernal 40 meg is to get a LT Kernal and dump all the other 3rd party hard drives/SFD's/ etc. except obviously the 1541's. Also the Receive EOL I had to set to linefeeds & carriage returns. The doc allude that this is done automatically when you pick Commodore mode. Hmmm. Don't appear to be true. Also what is the carriage return to be used in the function key setups? A control M? What do you use for the control character an up arrow? This is a good challenge of a term. There is one thing (OK, many, but I'll limit this first question to one) that I am curious about. Does the Lt. Kernal have (or has anyone written) a program that would work as a disk optimizer? Before you give me that blank look, the one reserved for people who know nothing aabout what they are asking, a disk optimizer is one that reorganizes the files on a drive. Files that are spread among the free blocks are placed in one *chunk* and the open space on the drive is freed for new files. (A bad explanation, but I hope you will already be familiar with optimizers.) Does the RECOVER option perform the same operation? Does the Lt. Kernal's VALIDATE command do any of it? Several times, I have had files share the same block on the drive (corrupting both), and more than once have had trouble with the drive freezing up during a VALIDATE or RECOVER. Any help or advice you can give me on this one would be appreciated. ------------ Category 20, Topic 6 Message 38 Thu Dec 28, 1989 LT.KERNAL [Lloyd S.] at 08:14 EST Good Question: We've given much thought to such a processor. It's not really complex in terms of theory, but the actual practice has to be perfect. It would take many hours of writing and testing to produce. In the meantime, there is an INDIRECT means by which you may achieve the same result. Use AUTOCOPY. Simply AUTOCOPY all the files from the LU in question to an empty LU. Then ACTIVATE the first LU, and AUTOCOPY the files back. The result will be an entirely CONTIGUOUS body of files.... exactly what an 'optimizer' would have produced. I know that's not quite what you had in mind, but it will work, and achieves the same end. Kernal 1 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 20, Topic 10 Message 1 Thu Dec 28, 1989 LT.KERNAL [Lloyd S.] at 08:35 EST Xetec, Inc, and Fiscal Information, Inc have recently become aware of certain individuals who are selling 'clone' Lt. Kernal hard drive systems at a price of $508. This is illegal, and legal action against the individuals is in process. As a result of these illegal activities, Xetec and Fiscal Information will now REQUIRE that you give your serial number when you call for assistance with your Lt. Kernal. Since we also have three Lt. Kernals which have been reported to us as stolen, this will help us possibly track down the stolen units. Thank you for your patience in this matter. Lloyd E.
