Here's a quote of the supposed preliminary specs: Built-in 3.5" drive 128K of RAM expandable to 1 meg (could it be a 65816, not a 65c02??) 4 Mhz 6502 (sounds like the same CPU inside the Laser 128EX) 64 software compatible (Vic III obviously, my idea) 320x200 to 640x400 resolution with up to 8 bitplanes (256 Colors) Palette of 4096 colors Routines to LOAD and SAVE IFF images built-in... price$300.00 to $350.00 To me this is just crazy if this thing is real... Why endanger the good A500 sales, why not just add a 64 chipset to the Amiga (like they did the 128!!).. Also, this will just add much confusion to the home market.... It sounds to me like a wasted R&D project from Commoodore. With R&D down these days I think it's a waste.. Plus WHY NOT 128 compatibility.. Not that difficult.. Sound a lot like the C=256 rumor I heard about from two years ago... The Senate & House of the State of Ohio, which had a fine old love-song waltz as it's state song, has voted to change the words. It seems that Beautiful Ohio, which referred to the River which gave the state it's name did not reflect the "diversity" of the state. Oh? Well, let's talk about that River up North that caught fire a few years back. Now THAT is diversity! The old Saw is indeed true: no one's life, property or reputation's safe while the legislature is in session. The future is Now. I was wandering into a Software/Hardware store this week--they were having a moving sale--and discovered that onsight publishing had come to my town. All those shrink wrap boxes are EMPTY. You want the latest game or wordprocessor? They'll put it on CD or Disks right in the store. (also cuts down on theft losses.) Eyeglasses, anyone? If YOU were a defense attorney and the prosecution's witness identified You, not your client sitting next to you, what would YOU do? What attorneys in that situation have done for generations: push your papers in front of your client & encourage him to take lots of notes. After the second witness mistakes you for that horrid criminal, the jury starts to laugh and the judge intimates that the prosecutor ought to get some guidance for his/her boss. The case subsides quietly into the dust as the prosecution declines to prosecute further. Is this a bad supply or a chip problem? ------------ Category 11, Topic 28 Message 2 Sun Jul 02, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC (Forwarded) Hi Vaughn! Welcome to the Hardware Clinic! Be happy to try to help! First, though the problem you describe could be caused by a failing power supply, its not my first choice. To be on the safe side, let me give you a test for the power supply. Turn on the computer as normal and wait until the symptoms appear. Turn off the computer (and everything else), unplug the power supply power cord from the wall, unplug the power supply connector on the computer. Looking at the open end of the power supply connector, this is what you should see: Keyway : 7 6 1 3 4 5 2 Using a voltmeter, connect one lead to pin 7 and one lead to pin 6. Be careful not to short either pin to the metal part of the connector. Set the voltmeter to a scale that will allow you to read 10 volts AC. Plug in the power supply. You should see approximately 9-10 volts on the meter. Unplug the power supply and move the meter leads so that the common (normally black) lead is connected to pin 2. Connect the positive (usually red) lead to pin 5. Set the voltmeter to a scale which will allow you to read 10 volts DC. Plug in the power supply. You should read approximately 5-7 volts. All voltages should remain stable. If everything seems ok with this test, than it is safe to assume Your problem is one of the chips overheating in the computer. My first choice is the Programmable Logic Array and the second is the Video Interface Chip. These are both major heat producers and will cause the problem you've described. At this point, you need to decide if you feel comfortable opening the case of the computer. *** WARNING **** Opening the case of the computer could void any warrentee which may exist! If you decide to go ahead, I need more information from you. 1. Is this the old style C64 (High profile case) or the new one (Low profile case)? 2. What test equipment do you own? (Specifically voltmeters and logic probe) 3. When the characters turn into garbage, are the correct number of characters still there in the correct places, or does the screen fill with garbage? 4. After turning off the computer and turning it back on, do the correct characters usually come on with wierd colors or do the characters remain garbage? 5. Do you have any experience with a soldering iron? I'll be watching for your post! See ya later, and Good Luck! ------------ Category 11, Topic 28 Message 3 Mon Jul 03, 1989 V.THOMAS1 at 12:18 EDT I own an old style 64. I have access to a digital multimeter, and I have VERY LITTLE experience with it. I can solder. When the weird chars appear, they sometimes replace others on the screen. When the screen locks up, everything freezes up and it appears as a broken down image. When I turn it back on, sometimes it comes up okay, but sometimes it comes up with the characters okay, but the colors wrong, ie, black or red letters on a blue field. An example is with my terminal prog. The characters are light blue on a black field. When it acts wierd, several blue characters dissapear, replaced by red, grey, green, or other colored ones. Then lines appear and the whole thing freezes. If I am using my modem, I can sometimes predict when it will happen. I will hear what I use to think was static and then the computer would freeze up. I hope this is clear enough. The only thing I can tell you DEFINITELY is that the only Kernal Vectors we support are those in the range $FFC0 (open) - $FFFF. If your routines use any of the serial-primitives below $FFC0, it definitely will not work on the Lt. Kernal. The difference in price between the C-64 and C-128 Lt. Kernals is $50. The difference is not ROM's, but a daughter-board which must be installed inside the C-128 in order to break out some processor signals CBM didn't choose to make available on the expansion port.
