************ Topic 1 Tue Oct 29, 1991 C128-BILL [Bill] at 10:22 EST Sub: Welcome to the FlagShip Bulletin Board Welcome. You have now entered an interactive part of the FlagShip that allows you to Read and Reply to other 8-bit Commodore user's comments, Questions, and Answers. 1 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 1, Topic 1 Message 1 Tue Oct 29, 1991 C128-BILL [Bill] at 10:41 EST Our FlagShip bulletin Board is set up similar to an outline. We have, first Major Categories. These can be listed (and buffered for later reference) by using the CAT command. Use the SET XX command to SET to a specific Category. Each Category covers a General Subject concerning Commodore hardware, Software, etc. It is important to keep some form of order in the Bulletin Board, so if you do not SET to the proper Category, your Topic Police will help you locate or just plain ol' Move your message to the proper area. Under each Category, we have Minor Topics. Many Topics can be in a Category, but usually they are all releated to the Category. For a listing of TOPICS, just SET to the desired Category (by using the SET command as explained above) and then enter TOP. Note the Topic number that interests you, and/or buffer that list, too. To read a specific Topic, enter REA YY (where YY=the Topic Number). You may use Control S and Control Q to stop and restart the flow of information. REPLYING to a Topic can be just as easy! Find the Topic Number that you wish to reply to, and enter REPly YY... now just type away hitting a carriage return every 60-80 columns. End your message with a *S for SEND. If this is your first time here, You will discover that there will be no new messages for you to read, so you may want to use the REAd command. After your first visit the BROwse command will automagically pick up all of the new messages since your last visit. Be prepared, though by having your buffer open, or use the Control S and Control Q commands. While this short message does not cover many of the Bulletin Board commands it will get ya going well enough to enjoy the FlagShip Message Center and start to really Learn How to unleash that power under the hood of your Commodore Machine! For more details, please see the Survival Kit that is located on the Main FlagShip Bulletin Board. Select Item #6. (type EXI or M625;6 from here) Remember, your Topic Police will help you use the Bulletin Board, and we may even move your Topic to a better location. Enjoy! ------------ ************ Topic 2 Sun Jan 31, 1993 YLR.ROSE [RTC Queen] (Forwarded) Sub: RTC Announcements! Glad to have you here and we'll help all we can.. First thing you can do is set a nickname for the BB, which will let everyone know what to call you.. at the first prompt you get after the menu, which I will guess you haven't turned off yet, type NAM and return.. it will ask you for a nickname to use that is less than 12 letters. That'll get ya started here. A great book for a beginner is the Genie Manual, which you can either buy a hardback spiral bound copy, or download it free from the Genie Library. Why not tell us a little bit about Neusoft? ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 17 Sun May 30, 1993 M.NEUS [Neusoft] (Forwarded) Not much to say, really...its mostly a hobby. So, have you seen ZOUNDS!? To date, its my only major release, but I've done some other minor projects as well. Hey, your probably the guy I need to talk to. Right now I'm working on a menu system for my CMD drive...well, actually the menu is done, just need to come up with an editor to edit menu entries. Its pretty slick (I think anyways), just move the arrow to the program or catagory, hit return, next menu pops up or the program runs, works in both 64 and 128 modes and keeps two menus for each side. It automatically calls up the one for the mode your in. Like I say, the menu is done, but entering the text in Paperclip is a chore, and confusing (even to the author!), so an editor needs to be drawn up. Would CMD be interested in such a program??? ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 18 Mon May 31, 1993 CMD-DOUG (Forwarded) We already have such a program which will be coming out on CMD Utilities. Ours requires no editing of text files, though - it just executes the selected program according to which option you select. Are you all from Q-Link (may they rest in peace, NOT!) and getting your sights here? It took me awhile, and I'm still rusty in some areas, but hey at least everything is updated constantly here! Just look in the download areas! Take care!!! :D ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 32 Mon Sep 06, 1993 M.COLWELL1 [MattMan] at 14:45 EDT Did Q-Link die? I quit Q-Link, and joined GEnie about a year and a half ago when I got a 2400 baud modem. Q-Link wouldn't go that fast. ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 33 Mon Sep 06, 1993 R.KNOP1 [Rob Knop] at 16:06 EDT I bagged off of Qlink something like 2 or 2.5 years ago myself. Two of the big reasons were (1) GEnie does 2400 baud, (2) GEnie does 80 columns. Plus, while the Qlink interface might be more intuitive to the first time user, once you get used to it and learn the tricks the GEnie interface is MUCH more efficient. I love being able to capture all of my new messages, read them offline, and write replies offline- saves me a lot of online time! -Rob ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 34 Mon Sep 06, 1993 J.JONES36 [LOADSTAR] at 20:00 EDT Heck, I literally don't have to pay my Qlink bill. Softdisk will pay it for me. I still don't log on except to check mail from users once a month. ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 35 Tue Sep 07, 1993 S.VANDERARK [Steve VA] at 23:34 EDT Well, say what you will, but QLink does have a lot more to offer the Commodore user. Don't get all mad at me for saying it, but its true. I mean, GEnie has nothing like Rabbit Jack's Casino, has no way to add comments to files in the libraries, has no way to tag a room in the RT with a title so users can drop into an area they think they'll be interested in (hey, there's never enough users in the RT at one time to warrant such a thing!), no Club Caribe with its live-action role playing, etc. etc. etc. The libraries are much much larger too, and I love to be able to send an OLM (on- line message) to get someone's attention! I realize that for many of you those things aren't what you're looking for, and that's fine. I spend a lot more tome on GEnie than QLink myself. But Q does have a unique Commodore environment with truly an amazing array of services for a (lets facec it) waning systm. Granted, I sure miss using Alladin when I'm on QLink (oops, did I give myself away? Yep, I call here with my PC, mostly...), and at least these libraries are still growing (QLink's have been "under repair" for the better part of a year now). I love GEnie and the Flagship, believe me! Butlet's give credit where credit is due! QLink does what it does andserves the market it serves pretty darn well. I can even listen to music while I answer my mail! So how about it, JBEE? Since Q always looks like it's slip sliding away, can you get Rabbit Jack's Casino or Club Caribe installed here? I never touch the PC graphic games here, but I sure could be persuaded to try a hand or three of Blackjack! Steve Vander Ark ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 36 Wed Sep 08, 1993 B.GANN1 at 00:08 EDT I agree. Both Q and GEnie are good, for different reasons. Hi, SteveV14 and Desiel! Brenda ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 37 Wed Sep 08, 1993 CMD-DOUG at 21:13 EDT Steve, perhaps you've overlooked RSCARDS? ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 38 Fri Sep 10, 1993 S.VANDERARK [Steve VA] at 01:04 EDT Hmmmm.....tell me more, Oh Great Cottony One. It won't be Club Caribe, perhaps, but hey! Brenda...not my favorite GEOS hater of QLink fame! My dear Lady Disdain, are yet living? ;) <== Shakespeare refernce, in case the rest of you missed Much Ado. Steve "Love 'em Both, so don't send me nasty letters" Vander Ark ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 39 Fri Sep 10, 1993 CMD-DOUG at 23:24 EDT Well Steve, why should I tell you when you can simply download the RSCARDS front end program for the 128 and try it out yourself? You'll be glad you did! :) ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 40 Sat Sep 11, 1993 QT.PIE [Sherry] at 00:35 EDT Yep, Steve you will be glad you did! Tonight (9/10/93) was our monthly RSCards night. We had a blast. Thank you to Tom.Patch, A.Pagliacci, and P.Trotter for joining me for tons of fun. It is actually pretty good. I like the 64kVDC option for C128 users, especially... ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 42 Sat Sep 11, 1993 J.JONES36 [LOADSTAR] at 02:18 EDT Steve! Hello! For those who never heard of me, I'm Jeff Jones, associate editor of LOADSTAR. I'm the guy to contact if you have any questions about LOADSTAR. ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 43 Sat Sep 11, 1993 C128.JBEE at 17:47 EDT Not to kill this topic too ... but I agree with Steve for the most part. Except to note that the "live-action" role playing and arcade action (interactive) games for the IBM PCs on GEnie are vastly superior to any Qlink offering. I am working on getting "unique" online games for the C-64 and C-128 done, just in the stage of getting the tools written :) ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 44 Sun Sep 12, 1993 F.OGLE [Color BBS] at 22:10 EDT Hmm... I couldn't stand olm's -- since the bps rate was only 1200, and Q is shuttling olm's AND adverts to you when downloading, your bps rate is cut even further. A total rip-off. Especially since your mail prompt on Q tells you as soon as you get mail (I remember an icon in the lower right-hand corner). I don't Program" doesn't mean diddly to me, and 90% of the comments were along those lines. The self- made room titles were the worst, and since I Q'ed mostly on I found it a real bummer, when rooms are titled "XXX for trade", "Guys who want guys", etc. Things like that are *exactly* what is wrong with modeming, as there is no structure or supervision. Seems like if you went to the chat rooms, you were privy to more wierdos than people who have common computing interests, especially late on the weekends. I did like the games. But those are basically the only areas actually not shut down. The download areas are, sure, larger than GEnie, BUT, they have been "broke down" since the last uploades dated 1/28/93. And if you think they will fix it, don't be too sure. I'll bet you they just turned that area off! A lot of areas are no longer in use, or haven't been updated in ages! Right before I quit Q-Link (August 31st) I usually check the entertainment area for movie news, tv news, etc. and it stated it is currently unavailable, please check again later, basically meaning it's closed forever! That was it, I cancelled my membership there to be more here on GEnie! Hi Brenda! Bout time you got here on GEnie, thought you'd die with the Q- Linkers! Oh, also, it's cheaper here on GEnie now than Q-Link, another plus, not to mention the constant updated download section, etc. I do still go on Q-Link with our user group disk since it's free, might as well get as many downloads as I can for our group, when I can get the time to do it. ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 46 Mon Sep 13, 1993 B.GANN1 at 10:12 EDT Diesel... The power of GEOS is that it combines all the things you can do with other programs into one integrated package. With the conversion programs available, you can use pretty much any kind of Commodore graphics in GEOS, as well as any kind of text file. And while there are excellent non-GEOS programs for nearly everything else, there are none that can approach geoPublish for desktop publishing. Combine that with the integration, and you have a system that is unbeatable. All of the main areas of Qlink are still up. ie: Commodore Software Showcase, Just for Fun, COmmodore Information Network, The Mall, etc. However, several discussion areas in News and Information, as well as some other areas are down... I dont know specifics because I never go in those anyway. There has been a problem making files live since January 28, 1993. The problem was that new uploads were over-writing some of the old ones. We have been told they are "working on it" for some time yet, but to no avail. So, people can still upload, but they are placed in a "holding area" until the problem is fixed, so go ahead and upload! Downloading *IS NOT A PROBLEM*, I should know, I downloaded 5 disks of SIDs last night! The only "major" thing on Qlink that isnt working, in my opinion, are the uploads. I can live without the Trivia, weekly upload guides, current event discussion, and some of those other ones. And, let me preface this by suggesting that this is mostly for the experienced user here on GEnie, although anyone is certainly free to give it a try. Basically, I seem to have accidently fallen into a fast way to post messages and replies in the Bulletin Board. The procedure is simple: Prepare the posting the same as you would if it were going to be sent with Line Prompts, the > character, usually. So, for example a reply might start out as: REP 4 blah, blah, blah... *sn Then when it comes time to transfer the message to GEnie, so your usual SET to the CAT #, and then simply straight dump all of the message. The dump will race ahead of the GEnie response, but then shortly you will see a stream of line numbers returned to your screen, confirming that GEnie has indeed absorbed all of your message, which you transmitted. Why bother doing this? Well, a fast stream dump is umpteen times faster than doing the more conservative and slower Line prompt, and especially a big time saver when your replies are long. Hope you enjoy this one! Howie ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 5 Mon Jan 11, 1993 R.KNOP1 [Rob Knop] at 00:31 EST Howie- What about the *up command? Maybe I don't understand what you are saying, but it seems to me that it would be better to compose the message offline in an editor, then start replying, do a *up, wait for your term to top sending, hit CTRL-C (or whatever your break key is) and then do *s or *sn. Am I confused about what you are suggesting? If so, please enlighten me! -Rob ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 6 Mon Jan 11, 1993 HOWIE-CBM at 12:46 EST Rob, Ah! I was afraid I didn't describe this very well.... The reasson "my way" is better is that it saves a number of time consuming steps, and after all time is money.... Yes! The message and or reply would in both cases get composed off line where it can be done properly and liesurely. :) Once on line my way requires only a SET # (where # is the number of the Category to reply to). Then the upload dump begins. To do it the official GEnie way, you would first have to also issue the REP # command, wait for the GEnie > prompt, then issue the *up command. Finally when the *up is complete, you have to issue a BREAK, and again wait for the > prompt before doing the *s or *sn. All of the steps in this paragraph can be skipped doing it my way. :) Howie P.S. Give it a try and see what I am talking about! P.P.S. This reply as other recent ones from me have all been posted using this fast abbreviated method. :) ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 7 Mon Jan 11, 1993 CBM-MARK at 21:45 EST Ahhhh, in otherwords, Howie, you're saying GEnie seems to have an input buffer where 'REP #' & data stream text are saved until GEnie is ready to do something with it! In which case *you're* way ahead of the prompts but GEnie is losing nothing and taking from it's so called buffer, losing nothing. You are starting your replys with "REP #" as the first line right? Do you also have the last line as "*sn"? ``Mark`` ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 8 Mon Jan 11, 1993 R.KNOP1 [Rob Knop] at 22:00 EST Howie! OK, I'm trying this message with a "rep 4" at the top and an "*sn" at the bottom. I understand now why you do it your way.... One other question, though: why not put the "set #" in the uploaded message as well? Or, will the delay waiting for the "# ?" prompt eat up subsequent lines? If you could do the "set #" with the rest, then one could visualize putting ALL of one's responses to various BB topics in a single text buffer and just uploading once... kinda like you can do with E-Mail, only this way it isn't "official" :). -Rob ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 9 Tue Jan 12, 1993 GULLIBLE [Jon] at 22:55 EST While I've never tried it with a message, I often enter multiple commands while waiting for GEnie to respond. Howie ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 12 Thu Jan 14, 1993 CBM-MARK at 22:11 EST Actually I'm really surprised to see you get 5 out of 6 good ones. I expected far more garbage sooner! I wonder how this would fair on a 'heavy use' time hear on GEnie? ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 13 Thu Jan 14, 1993 GULLIBLE [Jon] at 23:46 EST I discovered that if you hit CTRL-S before sending multiple lines, then you get disconnected. It is probably the node, rather than GEnie, that disconnects. I too wonder how this would work if GEnie is sluggish. ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 14 Fri Jan 15, 1993 CBM-ED [e.g.bell] at 10:50 EST I may be WAY off base, Jon, but pressing CTRL-S is probably sending an Xoff to GEnie. The disconnect may be an inactivity timeout if it is happening after waiting a bit. I have never done any of what you all are talking about, but do your terminals have delay settings for the characters you are sending. I don't know if GEnie uses Xon/Xoff flow control in that type of transfer, but you can control the speed and perhaps do as many messages as you like. The speed is a sacrifice for successful transfer if I am correct. ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 16 Sat Jan 16, 1993 HOWIE-CBM at 01:34 EST GEnie is always using xon/xoff for flow control, and yes this is very apparent when using this upload procedure. I am now confident enough (partially anyway) so that I am posting this message along with a number of others using this new technique. Just take a look at the Genie time that messages were posted by me today. :) Slowing down the upload (or more precisely the dump) doesn't seem to matter all that much. When GEnie's buffer gets full it sends along its xoff. What has me miffed about this is that many short to moderate length postings will work fine. However, when it comes to lengthy postings the occasional typo or character error appears. Nothing fatal since it is only text, but enough of a bother that I am reluctant to recommend using this without further testing, and trying to determine how to avoid them. What I have done is nothing more than put into a text buffer the exact keystrokes which I would send to GEnie to do things, as suggested by Rob. So, postings might look something like: set 3 rep 10 Hi Hilda, blah blah blah... Howie *sn set 5 rep 7 JBEE, Why the prob with big text files? Howie *sn etc. All of the above without indents, of course. :) I quess this process could even be expanded to STA new Topics, so long as all text line entries accounted for all GEnie prompts. Thinking about it, dumping this text file to GEnie is really nothing more exotic than presenting GEnie with a user who happens to be an extremely, very, very fast typist! :) Howie ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 17 Sat Jan 16, 1993 HOWIE-CBM at 07:59 EST Entering Multple Messages in The Flagship RoundTable ____________________________________________________ It works! And, it works well!! Because characters are streaming what seems to be needed is a slight character transmit delay. (NOT a line transmit delay.) With my particular hardware setup a 10 ms (millisecond) delay will do it. Using this setting, as hard as I tried I could not generate even one error. And, I transmitted a lot of text to a lot of trial test messages. Most all Terms and Communications programs will allow the user to set this parameter. I'd suggest trying a 10 ms setting first. (The actual key entry may vary depending upon the program. Some may ask for a 1 or a 2, or a 10 to accomplish a 10 ms character delay.) The plus side of all this is that: Now there is ONE stop-and-shop replying. Enter a RoundTable's Bulletin Board, and stream (dump) text replies to as many Topics and Categories as you want. All in one easy step. Although a slight delay (in my case 10 milliseconds) is necessary, it is still VERY fast. Certainly a lot faster than using the *UP command when there are several replies to get posted. That makes it a VERY cost effective way to post multiple messages into Bulletin Boards. And, the nice thing about this is that EVERYONE can use this procedure. It does not matter what computer you might be using, or what Term or Communications program you use. It will work for everyone! :) A few miscellany suggestions for those who wish to implement this: + Experiment with your software/hardware combination. Character delays may not be necesssary, or a higher value than 10 ms may be required. Use the setting that works best for you. + Do your trial test experimenting in one of the GEnie*Basic Bulletin Boards where it will not cost you anything. (As a courtesy, if the messages are just nonsense (as mine were) you might want to delete them so as not to annoy other users.) + Start all commands (the REP's and the SET's, and the *s or *sn's in the leftmost column, and end each with a carriage return . + Unlike the earlier procedure for transmitting a single reply, do include the hard carriage return after the *s or *sn. + While the text is being transmitted to GEnie your screen will appear awful. All sorts of garbage will get intermixed together. Do not be concerned. You can safely ignore it. + Most every Term program implements flow control (xon/xoff) as a default. Do not override this feature if you are using this procedure. Again, the formatting for using this might appear in your text file as: SET 4 <--- go to Category 4 REP 6 <--- reply to Topic 6 Hi Lou, <--- the message blah, blah, blah See ya, Howie *sn <--- end the message SET 6 <--- go to Category 6 REP 9 <--- reply to Topic 9 Hi Betty, <--- the message blah, blah blah See ya, Howie *s <--- end the message REP 3 <--- reply to Topic 3 in the same Category 6 Hi Frank, <--- the message blah, blah, blah, blah See ya, Howie *sn <--- end the message That's it! Enjoy! Howie P.S. If you would like to share this with others, please feel free to re-post into other GEnie RoundTables. There is no reason why Commodore computer users should be the only ones to benefit from this. None that I can think of. :) ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 18 Sun Jan 17, 1993 HOWIE-CBM at 21:06 EST ha! Just delete any postings that you do not want to remain. I did essentially the same thing while I was "honing" these skills. The one essential thing that seems required for this to work is to set your Term program for a character delay of 30 ms for the dump. And, if you want to try for any records, with that setting, the best that I have been able to achieve is 5 postings per minute. You might find that the delay is not necessary if you have especially clean lines. I found that any shorter delay would cause the ocassional error. Good luck! Howie P.S. Hollar for me if you need any assist! ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 22 Sat Jun 12, 1993 GULLIBLE [Jon] at 20:43 EDT Ok, thanks. It sounds like the fastest method of posting several messages at once. How would a 30 ms delay translate into Snapterms 0 (fastest) to 7 (slowest) setting? At 2400 baud, if I have both Line and character delay set at 0, it uploads at a speed equal to 1200 baud. Is that slow enough? I rarely have line nosie. ------------ Category 1, Topic 4 Message 23 Tue Jun 15, 1993 HOWIE-CBM at 11:09 EDT Jon, I am not sure what settings might be required with specific Term programs. However, the cleaner your lines, the less things have to be slowed. I was (am) pretty fussy, and didn't like the appearance of an ocassional error, so used the 30 ms character delay. If you don't mind an error or two appearing every now and then, less of a delay can be used. Angel Bear O:) ------------ Category 1, Topic 5 Message 27 Wed Jul 29, 1992 M.DULSKI1 [Mark @WIZARD] at 21:37 EDT Hi Angel Bear ;) There is a Wizard Support BB you could of used for this question that is part of GEnie*Basic ;) But since you asked... Wizard 64 doesn't have these characters built in like Wizard 128 does but there is an alternate "make-fkey" file in the Flagship Libraries I wrote that will let you define some of your function keys to print those ascii characters that petscii doesn't have. Vertical line, tilde(the wavy thingies ;), forward slash, left & right braces, maybe others(I forget). I don't have the file# handy but you can use the word "wizard" to do a search. About a dozen or so files will come up. Be sure it is the one for Wizard 64 NOT Wizard128. If you can't find it let me know or go to the Wizard Support BB (625;11) and look in Category #1 for the topic of "New Library #40 Wizard Files". I have the list of all the Wizard related programs posted in that topic. ``Mark`` ------------ Category 1, Topic 5 Message 29 Sat Dec 12, 1992 HOWIE-CBM at 07:27 EST . . ____ : __nn__ ________ ________ ________ ____ :_:____U :____:-:______:-:______:-:______:-:___\-:_______) oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo oo ooOOOOoo\ ------------ Category 1, Topic 5 Message 30 Sat Dec 12, 1992 C128.JBEE at 08:29 EST Nice one :) ------------ Category 1, Topic 5 Message 31 Sun Dec 13, 1992 HOWIE-CBM at 03:33 EST toot! ------------ Category 1, Topic 5 Message 32 Mon Dec 21, 1992 HOWIE-CBM at 05:22 EST ||/|/|/| | | | | | (o)(o) C ) | /__| | / / | ------------ Category 1, Topic 5 Message 33 Mon Dec 21, 1992 C128.JBEE at 06:44 EST Don't have a cow ;D ------------ Category 1, Topic 5 Message 34 Mon Dec 21, 1992 HOWIE-CBM at 08:50 EST > Don't have a cow ;D Very funny!!! Hugs. ------------ Category 1, Topic 6 Message 8 Thu Mar 18, 1993 CBM-MARK at 22:25 EST Hi Bull! Wizard for the C64 is file number 8897 (wiz64.sfx). Wizard for the C128 is file number 8898 (wiz128.sfx). The Flagship Libraries are entered from page 625, select item #3. Once in library select #6 from the library menu to download a file. Enter either filenumber that I listed above depending on which computer you have. (The C128 version ONLY runs in 80 columns) After you enter the file number you want to download, the file description will be listed to your screen. Enter -> D to do the downloading at the prompt. The protocal you probably should use would be #1, xmodem. Just about all term programs support it. After selecting the protocal (file transfer method) be SURE to wait for GEnie to tell you it is ready to send the file before you start the downloading from your end. After the download is finished, sign off GEnie, reset the computer and load the Wizard file. It is a self-dissolving archive so you will need a blank formatted disk to write the files onto. Now run the Wizard file you down- loaded and the Wizard files will be written to your blank disk. If you need any help getting Wizard up and running there is a Wizard help topic in Category #8. Just leave a message there and we'll get you fixed up in no time ;) The Wizard self-dissolving archive also contains the full documentaion, be sure to read it because there is some setting up you must do in the fkey file before Wizard will autolog onto GEnie for you. ``Mark`` ------------ Category 1, Topic 6 Message 9 Fri Mar 19, 1993 E.BELCHER1 at 22:30 EST I'M LOOKING FOR A TERMINAL PROGRAM THAT DOESN'T PRINT IN CAPS LIKE THE ONE I'M USING NOW(CCGM5.5).HOPE THIS HLEPS ELSP LPS YOU. ------------ Category 1, Topic 6 Message 10 Sat Mar 20, 1993 YLR.ROSE [RTC/Lib] at 01:14 EST E.Belcher.. since you are using ccgm5.5, I am assuming (dumb idea, I know) that you are using a 64? I was talking to an Amiga, ex-commdore, user at work and he said that GEOS is disk intensive and thus requires a lot of swapping, a second drive or a RAM card, TRUE or FALSE? And would the newer version of GEOS solve this problem. I'm looking at 4-8 year olds useing the program unsupervised and can't have them swapping disks all the time. --Milton ------------ ould *not* be the way to go if the predominate users are to be 4-8 year olds, unsupervised. Yes, it is disk intensive, but you *can* get away with using only 1 drive if you are careful, I did it for a few years before I got my second drive. Yep again, lots of disk swapping going from application to application. ``Mark`` ------------ Category 1, Topic 6 Message 33 Tue Aug 10, 1993 R.KNOP1 [Rob Knop] at 01:44 EDT Um, I'd like to interject another view of things. Yes, it is true that with GEOS you usually end up with a lot of disk swapping, and that GEOS runs much faster and better with a RAM expansion unit, and that multiple disk drives are handy. However: for what you are doing, you will be able to get away with everything on one disk and no swapping necessary, after the program has been loaded. Since you will basically be using only geoPaint, you can make up a work disk that has (1) the deskTop, (2) geoPaint, (3) your printer and input drivers and (4) any documents (files created with geoPaint). This should serve all of your needs. You will need to boot from the original disk, and then swap that disk out and put this other disk in, but once that is set up, you can just let it run. geoPaint will occasionally access the disk, when switching tools, and when moving the screen around the document (the screen only shows about 320x200 at a time, while the whole document is 640x720 pixels). This results in a brief slowdown, but you won't have to worry about swapping disks or anything like that. Incidentally, to answer another question you asked in mail, you can use a mouse with GEOS. (I will have to check to make sure there is a driver included with GEOS 1.3, but I think there is.) -Rob ------------ Category 1, Topic 6 Message 34 Tue Aug 10, 1993 CBM-MARK at 08:29 EDT You're right Rob, one work disk will work but I'ld worry about some of those 'brighter' unsupervised 8 yearolds messing with file saves, deletes, etc ;) All so easy to do GEOS. When you have more questions, let us know. If you will be running from the one drive, one suggestion I would make up front is that you have many copies of that work disk handy. This will allow any one 8 year old to mouse to his heart's content, totally destroying a disk, only requiring slipping another disk into the drive for the next youngster to destroy. Hey! This is beginning to sound like fun! :) Howie ------------ Category 1, Topic 6 Message 38 Wed Aug 11, 1993 CBM-MARK at 08:06 EDT HH> any one 8 year old to mouse to his heart's content, totally HH> destroying a disk, Hey! Our mouse came in today and it came with a copy of GEOS deskTop 1.5!!! Now I think this is what I need, but as you've heard me say before I just don't know commodore. Fliping though the manuel I see illustrations that look a lot like MacPaint and seems to be exactly what I wanted. My question now is, Where do I start? How do I copy disks? How do I set up for single disk operation? Etc? Etc? This is going to work! I'm sure of it now, but it may happen faster with your help rather than my trying to digest an entire manuel. --Milton ------------ Category 1, Topic 6 Message 40 Sat Aug 14, 1993 R.KNOP1 [Rob Knop] at 04:28 EDT Nuts.... I don't believe I just did that... had written a response, and instead of transmitting my buffer, I just cleared it... *** sigh *** OK... to summarize, I am not sure what is included with that GEOS disk that comes with the M3 mouse. It may just be the deskTop, I am not sure that tyou have geoPaint with that. (Also, I was never able to get that disk to boot, but since I already had GEOS 2.0 I didn't try too hard.) To get up and running with the mouse: put the disk in the drive and type: load"0:*",8,1 and hit RETURN. Once GEOS has finished loading and you see the deskTop, hold down the C= key (lower left of the keyboard) and hit the I key. This will bring up a dialog box. Use the arrow keys (lower right of keyboard) to move the pointer over the entry in the dialog box for the 1351 mouse (will have the number "1351" in it), and hit RETURN. Move the pointer over the OK icon and hit RETURN. At this point the mouse should work with GEOS for you, and you should be up and running. If you don't have geoPaint, and do end up getting a version of GEOS 1.3 from me or from sombody else, I would recommed replacing the 1.3 deskTop you would have there with the 1.5 deskTop you got with your mouse. On the other hand, if you get ahold of a copy of GEOS 2.0, you should just ignore the disk that came with the M3 mouse. -Rob ------------ Category 1, Topic 6 Message 41 Sat Aug 14, 1993 HOWIE-CBM at 07:08 EDT So, Rob, are you saying that you do not use GEnie's online editing features? :) Howie ------------ Category 1, Topic 6 Message 42 Sat Aug 14, 1993 R.KNOP1 [Rob Knop] at 23:46 EDT 1-6 Howie, *up is pretty much the only GEnie editing feature I usually use. In other words, you have to move your mouse a smaller physical distance across the table in order to move the pointer from one side of the screen to the other. Basically, try both 1351 and 1351(a), and whichever "feels" better to you is the one you should use. I'm glad that my terminal program was loaded on my RAMLink. I swabbed and inserted the jacks and plugs on both ends several times. Now I wish I had bought another drive to compliment the one I have. I'm still open for suggestions. Thanks, Howie. There was one other thing I noticed about my problem. After a disk access attempt and the computer locks up, I reset and trie to access my RAMLink. I use F1 to get a directory listing of files on it and I have to use the F1 key twice. I just get @$:* after the first push and a blinking cursor. Then when I push it a second time, I get the directory I was requested. Don't know if that last would help. ------------ Category 1, Topic 6 Message 50 Wed Aug 18, 1993 HOWIE-CBM at 03:17 EDT FO#1, OK, now we have clean solid connections on the serial bus. This is good. As you know F1 should not behave that way, unless you have redefined F1, which you obviously have not. Hmmm.... This is getting beyond my knowledge. I wonder if you might ask Doug, since you are now getting erratic responses from both the serial port (your drive) and RAMLink itself. Maybe it has something to do with timing and the jumper clip? This is only a wild quess... Maybe the jumper clip is loose? Now I am grasping at straws.... I'd ask Doug for a more difinitive response on this one. Doug! Oh Doug!!!! I wonder if he will see this, or if it might be necessary to ask Doug in his Category..... :/ Howie ------------ Category 1, Topic 6 Message 51 Sat Aug 28, 1993 L.VICTORY [FO#1] at 00:23 EDT I'll tell you what I'm gonna do. I had no other drive to try, so-- I ordered another one of those from that place advertised in the last issue of Loadstar over in the Carolinas. I'll let you know what if anything , if anything, was wrong. ------------ ************ Topic 7 Mon Aug 16, 1993 C128.JBEE at 13:54 EDT Sub: Hot Summer Nights for Commodore owners Hot Summer Nights for Commodore owners A topic about our upcoming promotions.
