What does improve the speed is the use of a programmed output. For instance, consider a vertical printout of a series of records located by the FIND command. Sent to the printer by entering on the command line OUTPUT FROM "H8LIST" (after entering PRINT DOWN) this produces the following output (for each record): Fieldname 1 Contents of Field 1 Fieldname 2 Contents of Field 2 ....... ....... Fieldname n Contents of Field n An identical printout can be obtained from a programmed printout as follows: 10 PRINT ACROSS 20 OUTPUT FROM "" @1"Fieldname 1" @15&[Fieldname 1] PLUS 30 @1"Fieldname 2" @15&[Fieldname 2] PLUS 40 ............... 50 ...............etc. 100 @1 "Fieldname n" @15&[Fieldname n] The difference is that in the second case the printout will be about 30% faster. Myself and a couple of others have been testing the final release version of this command and I will upload it as soon as I'm satisfied with it. So far, no problems. There is a version of it included in the development package that is online here. I think that the only difference is that version does not allow printing a range of pages. The final version can do any range of pages, odd or even pages, supports headers and footers, DATE, PAGE, and TIME, bold, italic, underline, superscript, subscript etc. It also uses a special configure file that lets you send up to 20 control codes for any of these special styles, allowing you to set up your printer any way you want. By doing odd and even pages, you can print on the front and back or print left and right columns. You can also tell it to start printing from the last page down to the first. For ex... files ending with ".SFX", just load and run from either a 128 or 64 computer, from BASIC (not GEOS), then use convert 2.5 from within GEOS to change them into GEOS format. files ending in ".SDA", can only be desolved from a 64, or a 128 in 64 Mode. Load and run the file, after it desolves then use convert 2.5 from within GEOS. files ending in ".ARC" get a bit more complicated. You have to run the ARC program from Basic, or use CSDOS and de- arc with the arc128/x command. ...So let us know which ones you are having trouble with.. You can also go to CAT #1 and read one of the help files JBEE has in there. (I think it's Topic #3..?) for downloading files. ...BTW...I'm almost sure, if you downloaded the convert2.5 program it has to be desolved from Basic first, then you can use it in GEOS... the "How-To" is in the file description of convert 2.5 so it might help to read the description over again, you might have missed something. ------------ Category 6, Topic 5 Message 10 Fri Feb 11, 1994 A.PEROTTI at 07:02 EST OK, I went back and read the file description for CONVERT 2.5DA and I need to run it as a basic file first. Re-creatng artwork with artistic license, making obvious changes, and calling it original makes sense to me. No question that SIDs would fit that definition. CBM-ED, > I can't address the issue with the SIDS, but I have never > heard it said that GEnie does not allow you to upload a file you have > uploaded here to another system. Think I read some discussion of that in GEnieus. I reread POLICY and see that in GEnie Services Terms and Conditions under 3. OK Ed, I am upset with everybody who had anything to do with the loss of SIDs on GEnie. Is that better? :) I still think that GEnie wiping out hundreds of SIDs might have been an overeaction, and that a better solution to the problem might have been found. > I suspect you are going to see the pool of SID's dry up > on legitimate local BBS's too eventually. You may be right. I guess SIDs exchange (and graphics, software, and other computer info) may have to revert to snail mail the way it was in the pre-BBS days. My setup is Novaterm in 80 col. ANSI mode If you are talking about here on GEnie, turn off the ANSI. You don't need it because GEnie doesn't use it, and it probably is consuming a lot of clock cycles testing for incoming escapes. Another suggestion would be to lower the flow tolerance, which I assume is the number of characters in the input buffer that triggers an xoff. You can lower that very low... even as low as 20 or 30 characters, if it is what I think it is. I suspect line delay would be what controls outgoing characters. I believe NovaTerm also has an adjustable screen scroll setting, where instead of scrolling 1 line when a new line is added to the bottom of the screen, you can add 2 or 3. Setting this to 2 or three might help. I'm not a novaterm user, and I seem to remember Nick saying somewhere that you should probably expect to lose characters in ANSI mode even at 2400 baud. I don't use NovaTerm...never have as a matter of fact, but the stuff above should hold pretty true no matter what term you are using given the problem you are having. (We can assume you tried with more than 1 diskette, right? :) The disk drive can't tell a QWK packet from a BASIC program. Neither can DesTerm or the FIDO BBS you are calling. If it is just the QWK packets, or just packets from that BBS, more specifically, you have to suspect line noise. SC> is there a terminal setting I've missed? Please help! For file transfers, the only terminal setting that should make any difference to a file transfer, other than the selection of the protocol, is the baud rate, and you would see the impact of that long before you ever tried to download a packet. Incidentally, while I'm here, what modem do you use, and what baud rate? And what software package is the FIDO system running? Opus? RBBS? DLG? SC> Does that really reflect 2400 bps?? Glad to be of any help w/the QWK thing. 20 seconds per 1024 bytes? Hmmmm! Ideally, 2400 baud should equal about 240 chars/second, based on ideal conditions, 2400 bits/second, 10 bits/character. So 4.??? seconds would be more in the ballpark. Are you sure you are at 2400? :) That sounds like a speed even less than 1200 baud. And remember, in a protocol, the data is streaming during the packet transfer, so I would say that that is pretty much the speed you should see in the transfer. 2400 baud is 2400 baud is 2400 baud. The reason you never see 100% efficience over the life of a transfer is that it takes time for the handshake between the 2 systems after every packet and the time it takes to write the data to disk. 20 seconds must seem forever! It may be time for 14.4, but there may be other problems here if you are seeing that poor a performance with your 2400. ------------ ************ Topic 22 Thu Feb 11, 1993 CBM-MARK at 01:53 EST Sub: WIZARD - Looking for Help? Frankly, I don't believe the RK> delay is working correctly. Yes, I understand it. However I know it is not the delay. The delay has nothing to do with how long a script runs or is allowed to run. It just specifies how lon the script will wait between characters from the modem. For example, suppose it is a reaaal slow night...lots of delays from the remote system... You get the letter 'e', and then 79 seconds of silence. The script would not time in that scenario because you have your delay set to 80 seconds. However, if the next letter took 81 seconds to arrive, the script would have timed out. In a situation where the text is streaming into the modem, you will never time out. The 'timer' starts at zero again every time a character comes in from the modem. I have a script that goes to the setting page and makes a bunch of settings for RTCM. It uses something like 21 or 22 cases and runs thru to completion every time. The reason I have had trouble testing your script more fully is that you read only marked messages, and I don't have any marked topics in those categories you use, but I'm going to go in and manually mark them so that I can test your script. Doing that, I should get as good a collection of messages or better. One thing that really throws me is that you say the script says it is terminating successfully. I know what that should mean, but I also know that things have happened over the years that I have been hard-put to explain, so I know better than to categorically say this cannot be happening. I'll test it myself. In the meantime, have you tried tracing script execution. This makes the screen harder to read, but does not change what goes into your buffer. All you have to do is press ALT while the script is running. This will tell you where you are in the script. You will be able to tell what case you are terminating on... if it is the same one all the time, etc. I suggest this because from what you are describing, the script seems happy with what has transpired. In order for that to happen, from the way I wrote the program, it should have gone through every case you set up. I'll try today to check also tho, but do give the trace a try. My earlier responses were messed up because I had to set my break char and I accidentally set my delete char to the same thing. duhhhhhhh! All is back now. :) ------------ Category 8, Topic 23 Message 133 Mon Feb 07, 1994 CBM-ED [e.g.bell] at 07:41 EST Howie (and Dick): I deleted the 2 garbled posts. First a few things. Mark, you deserve a LOT of credit for making scripts so easy for people to create. Dick's does a LOT in a little bit of script and I really enjoy seeing people make them and the fact that someone took the time to put together a program to make making them so easy! Dick, your script is very well put together, and I have a couple of suggestions for you to make it even better. First, Dick, does the last screen full of data when the script terminates look anything like this: Hello CBM-ED Last On: Mon Feb 07, 1994 Category 1 Welcome to the Family and Personal Growth RT 1 ?rea all new cat=45 nor No messages found in category #45 1 ?m1 Script Successfully Completed Usage charges stopped P 1? If it looks anything like that, the script has worked as it should. Second, here is what I did to test your script, and it was a BIG JOB! First, I went into all of the BB's you visit and marked EVERY TOPIC in EVERY CATEGORY. aiiiiiiiii! Next, I executed your script. Here is what I got on my disks: 0 "blank disk " eb 3d 141 "00AutoBuffer" prg 141 "01AutoBuffer" prg 141 "02AutoBuffer" prg 141 "03AutoBuffer" prg 141 "04AutoBuffer" prg 141 "05AutoBuffer" prg 141 "06AutoBuffer" prg 141 "07AutoBuffer" prg 141 "08AutoBuffer" prg 141 "09AutoBuffer" prg 141 "10AutoBuffer" prg 141 "11AutoBuffer" prg 141 "12AutoBuffer" prg 141 "13AutoBuffer" prg 141 "14AutoBuffer" prg 141 "15AutoBuffer" prg 141 "16AutoBuffer" prg 141 "17AutoBuffer" prg 141 "18AutoBuffer" prg 141 "19AutoBuffer" prg 141 "20AutoBuffer" prg 81 "21AutoBuffer" prg As you can see, I got a LOT of information the way I set things up, and I'm reasonably sure you don't have all the stuff marked that I did. The script works as you intended, at least it did for me. There are a couple of things I did different than you. The first, which would not make a difference one way or the other, was, when I was marking things, set the prompt to none... (pro non) so that the menus do not come up every time a bb prompt is offered. Since the script is going to see '1 ?' every time either way, this change makes no difference to you at all. The second change, however, I did not make, but I recommend. This one may be the root of the problem you are having. When you start your script, on entry to page 625, the first thing you do is to send a 'scr 0' command, which is a good idea and cuts way down on the number of things the script has to parse for. Wish I had done that in most of my earlier scripts. However, you don't do this for any of the other BB's you enter. What happened to me, running your script, was that every time I entered a BB, I got to the first full screen and was prompted to press RETURN or make a new scroll setting. I just pressed S and RETURN and that set the scroll for the rest of the session in that BB, but the same had to be done in the very next RT. If this is what is happening to you, it might cause what you are experiencing, though it would not terminate successfully. At any rate, this is one thing you might want to look into. As I said, and as you can see from the list of files in this post, the script works fine except for that scroll thing. A couple of times GEnie delayed in the middle of a line, but it resumed long before it would have timed out, and I just pressed cursor-down to send an Xon just in case. And here is one other thing too... I did this during prime-time, which is a slower period for GEnie. I can do no more now that say your script is fine with the one possible exception. Does this sound like it may be the problem? O, and thanks for introducing me to a couple of interesting BB's. Dunno if I'll ever find time to visit there again, tho if I do I have a decent script to use. :) What I will do is probably put in a sub-case to test for the RETURN Croll prompt with a 'repeat' token so that it will be handled if it occurs. ------------ Category 8, Topic 23 Message 135 Wed Feb 09, 1994 R.KIRK7 [Dick] at 21:38 EST CBM-ED Thanks for all the work checking my problem out. Your message caused my script to terminate while capturing it. Must have been the 1? in it. When I say it terminates I mean it acts like it isn't seeing the characters coming in, times out, and gives the Scropt Successfully Completed message. Sometimes it will put up the next page number i.e (m1430) right in the middle of capturing messages. I do get your example at the end when it works. This is usually after the second or third call. I hang up when it terminates on me as it also closes the buffer so I call back and re-execute it to get the rest of the messages. Incidently, I am using an Aprotek 2400 baud modem,1750 REU, 8 bank setup. Try that if you can rather than the Auto Buffer mode you used. How do you repeat extracts of my message when answering, by-the-way? Thanks agin for the help. My Dialog script does work. I like your programs saving to the REU banks better, however. There is a series of registers called QUEUE that flags that there is more work to do, and reaching the end of that series is the only way a script can actually be 'finished'. It captured all the messages on page 1430;1 as it should then when the 1 ? prompt showed up - the Case #13- rea all new cat=45 nor came up instead of the case #12 - m1235;1 This happens quite often for some reason. Thanks for the help. ------------ Category 8, Topic 23 Message 139 Sun Feb 13, 1994 CBM-ED [e.g.bell] at 10:27 EST Dick: I just ran through all of your RT's again successfully. Got every new message of every topic of every category. I have banks 0-6 in my 1750 full of data. My script never stopped, never exited... the only thing that was mildly annoying was the scroll prompt every time I entered a new RT. I suspect you set your scroll to 0 at the settings page at some time or another, but I was able to just press s and was good for the rest of the session. BTW, I also use command mode, and no prompts fwiw. Just for curiosity's sake, I have 2 questions. 1, why do you use DMA instead of RamDOs. It is not all that much faster considering that you have to move it out of there if you want to save it anyway... if you are just reading it and trashing it, I guess it makes a bit of sense. 2nd, and infinitely more important... if you use DMA, why do you have the page setting at 155 instead of 254 as the documentation suggests? It is a great waste of REU space doing it like that. You use defaults to change that setting, under the serial setting under the autosave sub-heading. I believe it is the last setting in the column and will force the buffer save at the full-buffer mark. I recommend you do that and it may solve the problem, tho I can't understand why. Bottom line, I just shot another 40 minutes buffering messages from 4 RT's. I just can't duplicate your results and I'm using your script, the 1750 and DMA now, a Supra 2400, with Omnitronix interface, and a flat 128. The REU is mounted in the front port of the ramlink, the same as if it were in the computer itself. There is not much else I can tell you. Your script works for me no matter what I throw at it, and if I put 1 more test in each of the BB entry cases that tested and replied to that scroll prompt, I could leave the thing unattended. :) Try changing your page setting and see what happens. Do your reads get you 8 or more pages of data? ------------ Category 8, Topic 23 Message 140 Sun Feb 13, 1994 CBM-ED [e.g.bell] at 10:36 EST Dick: One other suggestion before i completely throw in the towel. Try going in and reading all of your script stuff manually, outside of the script once. (make the page setting change tho). The auto-buffer will still work. But if 1 message is kicking you out, perhaps it is never getting completely read and it is the same message kicking you out every time. This is a stab, but I have tried everything else. :) ------------ ************ Topic 37 Tue Oct 15, 1991 C128-BILL [Bill] (Forwarded) Sub: Dialogue 128 Support Product Support area for Dialogue 128, by Gary Farmaner 34 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 8, Topic 37 Message 33 Thu Feb 10, 1994 A.PEROTTI at 22:46 EST I have a couple of Dialogue questions. Along with that, and the point of this message, I uploaded the SPXP-LINKS.ARC. This archive hasn't as yet appeared in the directories, for whatever reasons, but a few things need to be mentioned about it. This archive contains three files: "links" basic source, "links" compiled, and a documentation file. The doc file was written back in '92 and since then a number of changes of taken place. To add the l-LINKS game package to your BBS, you need to do the following (instead of what the docs instruct): - Type "EDIT" from the main prompt to go to the Edit link. - Type "STAT" to enter the Config Menu. - Select Menu "G", the Links Menu. - From this menu there are three options: 1-List, 2-Add, 3-Delete. You should then add the new link. Enter "LINKS". On your link disk you should have l- LINKS. As an after thought, I should mention that the links archive is a package of user/game oriented programs. Included are: Quiz (Multiple Choice or Short Answer), Vote (User lengthy responses to a sysop created question), Poll (User created multiple choice polls), Chess (Two player chess platform), Hangman (Simple Hangman game which uses user names or a words file of your creation), and Ads (A BBS ads section). The docs instructions for each section are still relevant and correct. Jason ------------ Category 9, Topic 1 Message 15 Mon Feb 07, 1994 C128.JBEE at 01:19 EST The LINKS file has not been released yet because it looks like it is corrupted and the other sysops had trouble dissolving it. If I do not have better luck, you will have to upload it again. Since the other BBS files do not need this archive to run, I decided not to hold the other files up while this one was examined closer. :) ------------ Category 9, Topic 1 Message 16 Mon Feb 07, 1994 J.MACINNES at 20:24 EST C128.JBEE, That's odd. Regardless, I took the opportunity to create a new arc with an additional doc seq outlining how to add the links program to v6.4 (as I did in my previous message). If there's any trouble with this archive please let me know. Hm... Will this cause any unforseen side effects, or were CMD products adapted to do this? ------------ Category 12, Topic 2 Message 269 Fri Feb 11, 1994 CMD-DOUG at 04:53 EST Accessing more than one REL file at once is not a shortcoming of the computer itself - it is generally a limitation of a specific drive, based on the number of buffers available. The limitation of one REL file applies only to 1541 and 1571 disk drives (or clones). The 1581, RAMLink, FD and HD can all handle at least two (the FD and HD can actually handle several). ------------ Category 12, Topic 2 Message 270 Fri Feb 11, 1994 D.BOBER [RENTaLASER] at 22:49 EST Having a problem with RamLink/GEOS and a C128D... First, this is how I had RamLink/GEOS configured with my FLAT 128. GateWay is located in a NATV Partition. Part.#1 RamLinks default device number is 8 I have a Super 1750 Clone REU installed in the RAM PORT. It is Partition number 31. (for Switcher and geoWizard) And I had a 1571 drive set at device #9 Now when I boot gateway from RamLink (#8), everything worked fine. I nnever had a problem...Until I bought a refurbished C128D... Before iI installed RamLink, I changed the device number in the Internal drdrive to #9. (Cut the trace closest to the front of the Computer.) But when I boot GateWay from RamLink (#8) it starts to load, but freezes right after the Pull-down menus and the date/time appear. The Trash can and drivers never appear. Neither does the filePad. Just stops... I have tried to boot from the floppy boot disk, same result. Even tried to boot from the Master GEOS Disk (after pressing SWAP 9), again, GEOS starts to boot, the DeskTop appears, so does the trash, then CRASH! Now, if I disable RamLink, and boot from the GEOS Master Disk, it works, but you obviously can't access the RamLink... Any Ideas??? Is there any reason I can't change the internal drive number to 9... :( ------------ Category 12, Topic 2 Message 271 Fri Feb 11, 1994 D.BOBER [RENTaLASER] at 23:03 EST Oh, I forgot... Thanks ------------ Category 12, Topic 2 Message 272 Fri Feb 11, 1994 CMD-DOUG at 23:54 EST Could be any of a number of things... If you aren't running with the timing jumper clip installed, that would be something to try. Position of the Normal/Direct switch also can cause boot failure if it isn't set exactly the same way as it was when the boot disk was created. Something could also be messed up in the System area of RAMLink, so you may have to ZAP SYSTEM and recreate the partitions. ------------ Category 12, Topic 2 Message 273 Sat Feb 12, 1994 C128.JBEE at 03:34 EST If you have this problem using gateWay it is usually because your disk drivers are not in proper order. Since you did not mention gateWay, I will assume you do not have it. So, run your OLD boot disk on the flat 128 with Ramlink, then pick the configure file and set up the drive sequence the way you want it with the 1571 attached (or in this case with a C-128D). Then save the configure file. Next time you boot GEOS on the 128D, it will properly search for the drives. Sometimes you have to configure the 1571 as a 1541 if you are having problems booting (especially with the Maverick boot). When using the normal deskTop, you HAVE to have the A/B drives as 8/9. ------------ Category 12, Topic 2 Message 274 Sat Feb 12, 1994 D.BOBER [RENTaLASER] at 10:50 EST I am using GateWay. But you need to figure out if the problem exists with it being connected to the 128-D or if it is just a problem with the 128-D itself, or if it is the internal drive. Since you can't disconnect the drive, put your RamLink back on the C-128 and boot up gateWay. Then, delete all the disk drivers except the one you need for the RL. This way, when gateWay boots up, it won't even attempt to look for the 1571, and any access problems with it won't occur. So, put the RL back into the 128-D and boot it up. If it comes up OK, then the problem is with the 1571. If it still does not work then it is a problem either with the computer or the computer/RL combination. Keep testing. ------------ Category 12, Topic 2 Message 276 Sat Feb 12, 1994 D.BOBER [RENTaLASER] at 14:57 EST M.Randall2... ...Thats it!!!! I booted gateWay/GEOS from my flat 128, removed the 1571 driver from the partition. Plugged RamLink into the 128D, booted gateWay, and it worked. Just can't use the internal 1571 drive. There must be a defect in the 128D and or the drive. I bought it from a mail order company. Its going back on Monday...Damn. I really appreciate it! :) ------------ Category 12, Topic 2 Message 277 Sat Feb 12, 1994 M.RANDALL2 [Maurice] at 18:09 EST Now that you've got it narrowed down to the drive, here's the next thing to check. My 128D is very sensitive to having certain monitors sitting on top of it. It will mess up about 10 percent of the time and it only seems to happen with certain programs. But ever since I changed the layout, it hasn't faulted yet. I now have two 1541s sitting on top of the D and then a power center on top of the 1541s. Then on top of the power center is the monitor. I think that the 1541s are providing a good shield for the built-in 1571. Try relocating your monitor and see what happens. Also, pay attention to little things like how the drive sounds, if the heads sound like they are moving smoothly. Does the drive start spinning if a disk is either removed or inserted? If not, then that is one problem to investigate. You might also have to do a ram test of the drive. Maybe somebody else has some other ideas. But I'd check the monitor for messing up the drive first. ------------ Category 12, Topic 2 Message 278 Sat Feb 12, 1994 D.BOBER [RENTaLASER] at 20:21 EST My monitor doesn't sit on the computer. In fact, nothing sits on the computer. The drive starts spinning when a disk is inserted and removed. How do you do a drive RAM test? ------------ Category 12, Topic 2 Message 279 Sun Feb 13, 1994 M.RANDALL2 [Maurice] at 01:03 EST Here's a little BASIC program that will test the ram area that the GEOS turbo code resides in within any drive that GEOS can use. It works on the 1541,1571,1581,HD,and FD. Since it's a BASIC program, it's kinda slow, but it works. It will take almost a minute and a half to run, and will work on either a 64 or 128. 10 input"device number to test";dv 20 print:print"wait, testing drive ram..." 30 vl=85:gosub100 40 vl=170:gosub100 50 print"drive ram is ok":end 100 open15,dv,15:ad=768 110 for m=1to32 120 ah=int(ad/256):al=ad and 255 130 a$=chr$(vl):forl=1to31:a$=a$+chr$(vl):next 140 print#15,"m-w"chr$(al)chr$(ah)chr$(32)a$ 150 ad=ad+32:next 160 print#15 170 ad=768 180 form=1to4 190 ah=int(ad/256):al=ad and 255 200 print#15,"m-r"chr$(al)chr$(ah)chr$(0) 210 for l=1to256:get#15,a$:if a$=""then a$=chr$(0) 220 if vl<>asc(a$)then print"ram failed!!!":close15:end 230 next:ad=ad+256:next:close15:return In addition to running this test on your D's 1571, try something else. Try to verify that the problem doesn't exist with the fast bus electronics of the 1571. There are a couple of tests you could try. Switch JiffyDos off and time how long it takes to load a plain old BASIC file in 128 mode. Then time it on your C-128 with your other 1571. If there is a big difference, then you are getting close to the problem. Also, copy the 1541 disk driver to your RamLink with your C-128. Then plug the RL back into your 128D and issue the command @U0>M0 to the 1571 with a single-sided disk in the drive. Now boot up gateWay from the RamLink and see if gateWay will run your 1571 in 1541 mode. I created a boot disk on a 1581 drive using Maverick v5 and loaded all the files needed on that disk. The 1581 floppy boots just fine. I then MCOPY-ed the disk to a 1581 partition. The HD partition will not boot. I followed the procedure twice just to make sure that I didn't make a mistake. Any ideas??? 2. I have also installed CS-DOS on a native mode partition and that seems to work just fine...until I try to unzip (using bvunzip) or unarc (using csxarc). If the HD is one of the devices involved in the operation my computer locks up. Is this normal? I have tried using native and 1581 partitions with the same result. Any suggestions??? For reference I am running the HD on a 128D with a 1581 and a 1541 attached. I have a Super 1750 Clone and an RS232 interface to a modem connected as well. Thanks, Tony Perotti ------------ Category 12, Topic 4 Message 199 Fri Feb 11, 1994 CMD-DOUG at 05:04 EST Before creating a '1581' boot disk, make sure you have the HD version of CONFIGURE (128 CONFIGURE in your case) installed on the disk you boot from (your SYSTEM disk). This disk must be used to create the Maverick boot disk. The way I did this with Maverick myself (years ago) was to SWAP the HD in, in place of a real 1581, just before the actual boot disk was to be written. Lot's of folks have found Maverick to be finicky, though, so we created geoMakeBoot a couple of years ago to perform this task. It has a number of advantages and really simplifies making boot disks and partitions, so I very much recommend getting it if you can't get around your problems with Maverick. ------------ Category 12, Topic 4 Message 200 Fri Feb 11, 1994 A.PEROTTI at 07:02 EST Thanks for the prompt response, Doug. I think my mistake was that I did not transfer the new CONFIGURE 128 file to the original boot disk. I'll try that and let you know if it works. Tony ------------ Category 12, Topic 4 Message 201 Fri Feb 11, 1994 C128.JBEE at 18:11 EST Not only is geoMakeBoot easier to use, it is cheaper too. Only reason I bought Maverick was for the geoboot and it has been sitting idle ever since :P I never was able to get the Geos file copiers in Maverick to work correctly with my system either. ------------ Category 12, Topic 4 Message 202 Sun Feb 13, 1994 H.HERMAN1 at 02:42 EST Tony, Regarding your cs/dos question, have you properly assigned the drives? Also, and *very important* for some cs/dos applications, you *cannot* use assigned drives other than 0. So, for example, if you are using a partition that happens to be 9, then default (@cp9) to that partition first. And, finally, while the docs do not describe a need for drive designators within commands, by using them, you can avoid lots of probs. Actually you can alter the start.p program on your Superbase boot disk if your really feel up to. I've done a similar thing to my Superscript boot disk sot that the default printdriver file is a customized file for my Star SD-10 with all the macros built in (e.g. ESC p to change drive partitions). Thing is, you gotta do it with a track and sector editor like Disk Doctor or Peek-A-Byte 128. As you know, any attempt to delete the old start.p program and replace it with a modified version just overwrites the damn copy protection scheme. Also the modified start.p program will have to be on a portion of the disk where there are no copy protection errors. Obviously, you only attempt this on a backup copy of the boot disk. Any Ideas? ---JohnS ------------ Category 12, Topic 29 Message 24 Sun Feb 06, 1994 CMD-DOUG at 20:27 EST Well, if your copier is written in a such a way that it doesn't mind copying to the same device, then your only real problem is in copying to the same specific directory... and so long as you're checking for errors after attempting to open the destination file, you should be able to trap a 'file exists' error right about then. :) ------------ Category 12, Topic 29 Message 25 Tue Feb 08, 1994 J.SERAFINO at 18:43 EST No, It doesn't mind copying to the same device. And the problem is copying to the same specific directory. You DO get a "file exists" error, and a message to overwrite... but your toast if you select yes, and your target directory is the same as your source. Somehow, Ii have to make it smart enough to realize the directories are the same... But as I said, I don't have info about the source dir to compare to the user-inputted target dir. My problem is I need a real slick way of doing this. With all the other error checking, such as checking to see if the target device exists, what type it is, what partition and type, if the dir exists, etc. I dont have uch room to do much else. (modules are only 2k, remember). I hoped that opening the source file in read mode first, then opening the write file would generate an error, but it doesn't. ("file not input file, or something"...) ---JohnS ------------ Category 12, Topic 29 Message 26 Tue Feb 08, 1994 CMD-DOUG at 23:44 EST So I assume that what you're saying is that you wish to allow the user to replace an existing file with the same name (provided it isn't in the same directory). There are some tricks you could use to get by this, I suppose. The first which comes to mind is that you could create the new file under a temporary name, scratch the old file, then rename the new one. This, of course, requires some extra space. You could also read the directory headers from the two directories and compare the 'parent' pointers. This can be done without direct track and sector access, but you would have to know the path of the source directory (as well as the path of the target)... unless the source directory has been made 'current' by regular DOS commands. In which case, you need only know the path of the target directory. There are probably some other methods, though they get even more involved. ------------ Category 12, Topic 29 Message 27 Wed Feb 09, 1994 J.SERAFINO at 20:42 EST Well, The module is compatible with all devices, naturally. It knows what type of device you set as the target. (and if a "path" is necessary. ) The source device/directory is whatever is currently being displayed on the main window when the module is invoked. I'm not sure that you understand what the problem is, I possibly explained it wrong. If your source device / directory is your HD, for example, and you are currently in a native partition, say //sidplayer/music files when you invoke the copy module, it is possible to set that same path as the target, which results in big trouble. I was counting on a DOS error when you try to open the same file for write as was opend for read. i.e I open the source file for reading, then open the target with the user supplied path. If the files are one and the same, I expected a DOS error to result, and I could use this error to inform the user thet the target path is the same as the source. No checking is needed if the current and target device numbers are different.... If I had a little more space, I could read the source path and compare it to the user-inputted target path. ????????? ------------ Category 12, Topic 29 Message 28 Wed Feb 09, 1994 CMD-DOUG at 22:58 EST John, I did understand it. The work-arounds I described are valid methods. As far as errors for having a file open for both read and write goes, it is intentionally a valid thing to do, so there is no error. An error only occurs if you attempt to write to a file already open for writing. ------------ Category 12, Topic 29 Message 29 Thu Feb 10, 1994 J.SERAFINO at 20:05 EST Yes, and thank you. Was a bit of a struggle getting it in the remaining space I had, but the module functions perfectly, now. I'll upload to your mailbox, and you can tell me what you think. (I'll probably do this tomorrow...) ---JohnS ------------ ************ Topic 6 Mon Dec 06, 1993 QT.PIE [Sherry] at 17:55 EST Sub: Acronyms A place for your favorite and most unusual ACRONYMS! Personally, I think it's a short name for the Washington Zoo. YooHoo Kinda like a knock on a door. This phrase is usually used by old ladies and oh yea, by WaZOO- compatible mailers such as BT, FD, DB, Opus and Dutchie. YaHOO A name given to YOOHOO by a developer who didn't want to play. EMSI A poor spelling of ELSIE, a famous cow. NewHoo An incredibly stupid name for something that doesn't exist. FTSC Fidonet Turkey and Salami Committee. Their task is to prepare the luncheons for FidoCon. IFNA Intra-Fidonet Nuclear Arsenal (Luckily for all of us, it was disarmed before it exploded.) RC Real cool - no further explanation needed. REC Really extra cool - ditto NC Nearly cool (pretty cool, but not "Real cool") NEC National Evangelical Convention, or a brand of computer equipment and monitors. ZC Zone Czar (A Godlike person who has a blast deciding the fate of the rest of us in a zone I think he could just say "OK, new rule: only PS/2 systems allowed in this zone." if he felt like it. [or maybe all nodes must display ANSI- purple logon banners]) It has been rumored that the ZC is fourth in line for the presidency of the United States, should the President, Vice-President and House-Speaker all happen to die at the same time. ZEC Zone Entertainment Czar - This is the diety who tells other people what to do with their hard-earned money. (At FidoCon, I think he's in charge of hiring the band...) *C A command in some mailers to substitute the actually connect string when spawing a BBS Policy A document generally read only by those who created it. It's supposed to be followed, but most feel "rules were made to be broken." Echo- Policy A system whereby the non-technical people try to tell the software developers what to do. Flame Usually relating to fire; often involves smoke. Fido- news The most widely-read publication in history. Node- list A list of all the people that want to receive junkmail, bombing-runs, viruses, trojan destructo programs and generally unsolicited mail (and kids sending file-requests hoping to find pirated games) Standard An oxymoron meaning "somthing that is supposed to stay the same but changes constantly." Zonegate Somewhere to send your mail if you don't care if it gets read by the operators of the 14 systems it will pass through. Also, if you want your mail to take a few days getting there, this option is it! Protocol Something that R2-D2 knew over 1,200 of. ZMODEM A file transfer protocol that keeps going even if the recieving machine crashes. Second only to SEAlink, it's "pretty fast." and used by all mailers at the Washington Zoo. ZEDZAP An altered version of ZMODEM named after the fact that Europeans simply can't call it "ZEE-MODEM." The ZAP part is because the maximum packet size was stretched to 8K just so mailer authors would have to allocate that much extra memory so a transfer could go a minute percentage faster. Again, a requirement for all mailers at the Washington Zoo. XMODEM Something we all used previously - like "XWIFE." MODEM7 Absolutely the most ingenious way ever invented to transfer a filename to a remote system. (Just kidding - I could write it in greek faster...) TELINK A slower clone of the SEAlink protocol. Generally used only in the U.K. at tea-time, but also by some "XX" mailers when talking to the first commercial Fidonet-compatible mailer. SEAlink A method of sending data overseas, usually using a large freighter or other seaworthy vessel. The diskettes are loaded into the cargo hold where they are stored until they reach the other side of the ocean, seconds later. (It should be noted that calculations PROVE that SEAlink is in all cases much faster than ZMODEM) YMODEM Why use a modem - mail a floppy disk! Janus Definiately a God of Greek or Roman origin (I forget which) Fidonet Something created by Tom Jennings that grew into something none of us could have expected. Fight- O-Net A name given to the network by a famous mailer author who shall go un-named. NET 107 Fidonet's New York-based labratory where cruel routing and forwarding topologies were tested in the mid-to-late 80's. Because of this cruel mind-bending, most sysops in NET 107 doesn't understand how simple things can be configured. Alternate- network A place to go when the politics get too thick in Fidonet. (Just remember the saying about the grass being greener...) Politics Something that happens when you get three or more people together. (With just two people, it's called a fight.) Point A system designed to make mailer and ECHOmail processor authors go absolutely crazy and want to kill each other. Censor- ship The worst thing that could possibly happen within Fidonet. The penalty should be death by horrible torture, but unfortunately, current policy does allow for capital-punishment. Mailer- Author Someeone who MUST be crazy, receives both praise and flames constantly and must make sense of all of the technical stuff. I think that it's more important to be a philosopher than a programmer to be a "mailer- author." After all, mailers are simple programs - a kid could write one... Utility- Author Someone smart enough to know not to write another mailer. BBS- Author I think the last count was 2,492,192 BBS packages in the world. Of those, there's a few-dozen good ones. Both should be considered BBS authors, but the good ones know who they are. SysOp Short for Sysmagraph Operator - this is the person who monitors the earthquakes. They don't usually warn us about anything, but tell us how bad we're hurt when we already know. -------------- Daffynitions. AUTOMOBILE - A mechanical device that runs up hills and down people. BRAIN -- the apparatus with which we think that we think. BATCH - A group, kinda like a herd. GAY ABANDON - Homosexual repellent perfume. JURY -- Twelve people who determine which client has the better lawyer. KODACLONE - duplicating film. MOP AND GLOW - Floor wax used by Three Mile Island cleanup team. QUARKBAR - the candy with flavour and charm. QUASIMOTO - 4 wheeled hard-top moped made in France. SQWERTY - Computer keyboard sized down for use by children. TRAPEZOID - A device for catching zoids. XMODEM - A spot-marking transfer protocol. YTERM - A terminal program for queries. ------------ Category 16, Topic 6 Message 15 Sat Feb 12, 1994 C128-QT.PIE at 17:34 EST Wow Cam!
