If you are using the 128 version, while on line but before it finishes receiving the new messages, press the ESCape key. Wizard will change from AUTO mode to STAY mode. When it is done capturing the new messages, they will still save then leave you on line. Simply go back to the AUTO menu and select CAPTURE NEW MESSAGES followed by selecting which board you want to go to next. If you are using a 64, I don't know the key combination to use since the ESCape key is not there but it should be in your manual or someone else on this board will be able to explain it to you. (1) Provision needs to be made for programs like PaperClip III that use "illegal" 6502 opcodes. If the illegal codes cannot be duplicated either in hardware or in software on the accellorator board, then the unit should provide for a hardware or software-based switch that can be toggled to disable the ZIP board and re-enable the original CPU's. (2) The board should provide a place for the original microprocessors ROM's, and video drivers to be installed, where they can be re-enabled in case of a software compatibility problem. (3) The board should be compatible with current RAM expansion units for the C128, especially the 17xx family of REU's. A lot of folks have learned to depend on these units, and some have even expanded them to 2 meg. (4) The board should accellorate not only the 80-column C128 and CP.M modes, but also the 40-col C128 and 40-col C64 modes as well. (5) JiffyDOS compatibility, and compatibility with other CMD products must be maintained. Again, though, it cannot be overstated--there MUST be either a software or hardware override that can disable the board if there is a software or hardware incompatibility. If the unit does not include this feature, I will not purchase one! I would also like to see variable clock-speed settings so that you can "fine tune" 40-column games and the like to get them "just right." One last thing to consider: there are two ways I can see to increase the speed of the 40-column C128 and C64 modes: either you can keep the same VIC chip and properly interface it to the new faster processors (which is in my opinion the LEAST desirable option), or (2) you can design and emplement an intirely new 40-column driver chip. I urge ZIP and Parsec to consider that 40- column mode is where the speedup capabilities of the upgrade is needed MOST. Thank you for your attention. --James T. Peeples ------------ Category 2, Topic 18 Message 2 Tue Aug 06, 1991 JIM.COLLETTE at 19:33 EDT I wasn't aware that CP/M was going to be supported too... that seems like it would add a SIGNIFICANT amount of work to the design process (remember, CP/M runs off the Z80, not the 8502). The unimplemented 6502 opcodes might be tricky unless the faster CPU already supports them... I'm surprised a program like PaperClip would use those in the first place!! I don't think it would be absolutely necessary to redesign the VIC... the only reason it doesn't work in 2 MHz mode is because it's the chip that generates the 1 MHz and 2 MHz system clock itself - when in 2 MHz mode, the chip just isn't fast enough to produce the 2 MHz clock AND maintain a video display, which is why it just turns to sparkle (only the display is shut off; the chip still functions - in fact, as far as I remember, the CIAs don't run at 2 MHz either; but you can still use them in 2 MHz mode because through clock stretching, the 128 still only accesses the chip at 1 MHz... the same is true for the VIC). All that you'd really need to do is provide an alternate source for the system clock; if the VIC is freed up, it could still produce a display at the higher speeds (because like the CIA, it would still only think it was getting a 1 MHz clock anyway). This all assumes that the support chips would still be clocked at the slower speed (via clock stretching or whatever)... if you want to actually run the VIC at 8 MHz, that IS take some work... :) I've never had a chance to look into it more, but I think with a 2nd VIC chip and a little support circuitry, it would be possible to do 2 MHz mode in 40 columns on a regular 128... you'd just let one VIC handle the display and the other run the clock - basically just decode the $D0xx block a little farther to pass $D030 through to the VIC that's providing the system clock, and let all the other lines go through to the one making the display... that way the one handling the display would always be in 1 MHz mode, but it wouldn't matter because you'd be getting the clock from the other chip. Jim :) ------------ Category 2, Topic 18 Message 3 Tue Aug 06, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 23:18 EDT All good points. Or as a whole replacement. ------------ Category 4, Topic 4 Message 12 Mon Aug 05, 1991 VOYAGER-1 [Gary V] at 01:55 EDT Just to add some info so that there isn't some later frustration : The keyboard from the VIC-20 ( and those C-16 keyboards that were sold as surplus by Radio Shack a few years ago ) has the same layout as far as size and they can be used as a replacement with a little bit of work. The key matrix on the printed circuit board below the key plungers is different for each computer type. You will need to swap the PC board from your 64 and install it to the new keyboard. It is the contact pads on the bottom of the key plungers that cause the problems ( 99% of the time anyway ). If the old PC board contact spots look somewhat dull, first try cleaning them with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. If that doesn't do it, then LIGHTLY clean them with a SOFT pencil erasor. There is a whole bunch of little screws that hold the PC to the keyboard and you will need to un-solder two wires that connect to the Shift- Lock switch. Also, the location of some of the keys is a bit different, so you probably will want to swap Keycaps. Write down where they all go before removing them from the dead 64 keyboard ( reccomended if you have temporary lapses of memory at critical times like I do ). They pry off rather easy with a screwdriver. There is a spring pushing them back up, so watch that you don't have to go crawling on your hands and knees looking for one. They just snap back on the new plunger. I've never gotten around to it, but in the book "Anatomy of the C128" there is a short program for this. What you do is POKE a new keyboard memory map into the free registers located above BASIC and redirect the keyboard interpreter routines to the start of this memory stack. Then you have to either glue some keypad templates over the existing keys or carefully remove these from the keyboard and switch them around to the Dvorik format. The biggest problem you will find is that the 'automatic' words from the QWERTY keyboard ('the', 'is', 'a', etc.) are different on the Dvirak keyboard. Your fingers will keep trying to reach for these keys for months or years after you switch over, which will slow you down. ------------ ************ Topic 33 Thu Jul 11, 1991 C.STATEN1 at 21:51 EDT Sub: 1581 drive problems random errors 14 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 4, Topic 33 Message 11 Tue Aug 06, 1991 C.ERTEL at 05:10 EDT Does anyone know where to locate and lasso on to this infamous WD1772 chip. If someone has a copy they're willing to part with then used is fine also. Or if there is someplace or someother way to learn this I'd appreciate that also. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks:) ------------ Category 6, Topic 25 Message 2 Thu Aug 08, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 02:32 EDT A ISBN number might help him if anyone has it...could probably order it? ------------ Category 6, Topic 25 Message 3 Thu Aug 08, 1991 JIM.COLLETTE at 19:00 EDT You can't order it because the book is out of print. :( (For what it's worth, the ISBN is 0-553-34404-8 and it was published by Bantam Books.) Chances are if your name begins with A,B,C,W, and (now S,R,D) you have already recieved or will receive #29 within 4 days. I did mail about 800 issues by first class mail, all the rest go out bulk mail (3rd class). If you are wondering about the letters I had decided to retype the whole mailing list into my database and then mail the ones typed in. One I did this so I could keep using DM128 vs switching to another DB. But most importantly I wanted to make all the names for the next mailing OCR correct to speed up the mailings for #30. There were a lot of stupid little things that hold up bulk mail and why it doesnt get there quickly. Like having incorrect abbv. ;), improperly addressed labels, etc that slow down bulk mail. Those have all been corrected so the next issue (#30) gets there quicker without hassles. Another change will be the "issue" information. It will be printed above the address and not below it. By #31 all addresses should be OCR correct which will mean 4-10 days (max) for the mail delivery. I consider #29 the July issue and #30 will be printed and delivered the second week of September. I know a lot have already recieved their issues because I am starting to get the ZIP surveys back in my own envelopes. ------------ Category 16, Topic 12 Message 4 Mon Aug 05, 1991 C128-BILL [Bill] at 11:07 EDT ..and I must say issue 29 is a peachy one!! Nice work, JB. ------------ Category 16, Topic 12 Message 5 Tue Aug 06, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 23:24 EDT Hi :) Thank you! I just recieved a nice compliment today from someone on how well they liked the newsprint and how clear it was. As I explained to them I really shopped around and did my homework on the paper/ink combination to get the lightest and best paper. I think the 1/2 tones came out pretty good. ------------ that's all folks!
