Put 'em here! 37 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 1 Fri Mar 13, 1987 MICHAEL.M [-:SysOp:-] at 20:08 EST I was impressed enough by ULTRATERM to think that it will be getting alot of airplay, so here's a TOPic for it. I really like the look and feel of this term program. A few of the options that I enjoyed were the large buffer area (over 60K, with ability to transfer PRG-type files to/from it), the well applied XModem protocol (both quick and seemingly reliable), the option to keep the disk directories on-screen or erase them after an access, and the way the menus are set up (ala Sixth Sense, but laid out better, and with more intuitive keystroke sequences). The author is online with us (S.BOERNER) and perhaps we can coax him into giving us his plans for updates, hints for using version 1.00, etc. ULTRATERM is a *Shareware* program and a fee is requested if you use it. (If you *do* use it, feel guilty and send him the $$) Lastly, the documentation file is very concise and very well done! Bravo, Steve! Any other views about UltraTerm? ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 2 Sun Mar 15, 1987 B.HAYFORD at 07:35 EST Ultraterm: Well worth the 10-20 asking $ for 'Shareware' to keep refinements coming! A buffer editor would be nice; also, I didn't see a 'transmit from buffer'option. I have used this pgm for the past 2 days and the only thing that I haven't tried is an upload. Will try that later on today. Downloads - xmodem - worked fine except for one thing: On a long transfer that is over 500 xmodem blocks the the download indicator goes to 500 all right but then doesn't reset itself so the blocks that are being sent can't be seen on the indicator - it just scrolls off the bottom and gets lost. By the way, can a program that is designated as xmodem be downloaded with Punter protocall?? The other thing that wouldn't work is the Autodial from index feature - It wanted to use Tone and I couldn't get it to use pulse no matter what I tried. Yes, I did set the parameter to pulse. I am using a SMARTeam 1200 and Saylor interface with my 128. All in all, a very good Shareware program - My $ is on the way. Bert Hayford (B.Hayford) ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 3 Sun Mar 15, 1987 KEVIN.S [*Sysop*] at 13:19 EST Bert- As far as the protocal goes, the designation XMODEM/PUNTER refers ONLY to the type of error-checking that will take place between the remote system and your terminal as the data is being transmitted: it has nothing whatever to do with the format or content of the data file. So, a PROGRAM would not properly be designated as XMODEM or Punter, but the system itself. Here on GEnie, XMODEM is now used exclusively as the error-checking protocal. You will occasionally see a text file in the libraries marked as type "7" instead of "X". This indicates that it was uploaded for transmission as a "7-bit file" with no error-checking, and indeed, when you go to download it, you will not be prompted to start your XMODEM transfer, but to open a capture buffer. Some BBS systems offer BOTH XMODEM and Punter, to serve the widest spectrum of users, and provided that your terminal supports both protocals, you can download a program with equal success either way. KeS ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 4 Sun Mar 15, 1987 DEB [*SysOp*] at 14:48 EST A Small Caveat when downloading from an XMODEM/Punter BBS: Most people downloading with Punter will not be familiar with XMODEM stripping requirements, but if a file was UPLOADED with XMODEM, and then downloaded with Punter, it will still have the original XMODEM padding on it. Most sysops I have seen have not taken the time to strip and re-submit new uploads to their system. *deb!* ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 5 Tue Mar 24, 1987 W.HATCH [Belgarion] at 21:28 EST Steve... Excellent work!!! I love it! However, until I get my own 1670 or hayes modem, I can't seem to get it to work. Also, reading all the other messages around, there seem to be a lot of users with the TeleLearning modem... Ultra- term seems to be unable to use it. Can we hope for an update or a patch? I hope so... you'll get an incredible following if you can provide one because this program is SOOOoooo nice! ----====> Belgarion <====---- ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 6 Thu Apr 30, 1987 S.BOERNER at 03:00 EDT Coming up ... Ultraterm update sometime before midsummer ... enhancements will include: . 1) Xmodem/CRC and Windowed Xmodem. 2) Support for two drives (8/9). 3) Faster file reader. 4) Multi-Dialer and repeat dialer. 5) Connect-time clock. . ...and various other odds and ends. More information from users would be appreciated, especially concerning modem compatibility ... which modems is it working with? and which isn't it? So far I know it's been used successfully with all CBM modems and the Avatex and Ventel ... if you are using a different type I'd like to know if there are any problems. . Some bugs: . Auto-answer doesn't work with Hayes compatibles. Writing the buffer to a full disk can cause an undetected error ... ..causing DOS not to close the file properly and it may cause the ..screen to go haywire. . It destroys the Term window you have set up. Great term,by the way. Regards, ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 13 Mon Sep 14, 1987 S.BOERNER at 00:18 EDT Omicron-I: Yes, you and others have mentioned this bug, and it's annoying. Strangely enough the bug was also in v1.00 and no one ever came across it. The fix is simple; just filter out control codes for local echo. I doubt if it's worth a new release, I'll just catch it the next time around. The difference between 2.00 and 2.01 has to do with the Punter protocol. Punter downloads with 2.00 are unreliable. Version 2.01 was released to correct this. ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 14 Sat Oct 03, 1987 ABERCROMBIE at 01:34 CDT . I'm using ADC modem with OMNITRONIX Delux interface. Each time I've tried it the routine aborts the upload. Downloads seem to work fine I've tried both XMODEM and XMODEM/CRC. I used Ultraterm 2.1 for three or four days before I released it, uploading several files, both CRC and checksum with no trouble. I understand from Steve that the XMODEM gets a little shaky at 2400, but shouldn't be a problem at 1200. Yo, STEVE! What is the word? KeS ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 17 Sun Oct 04, 1987 ABERCROMBIE at 22:17 CDT I was using 1200 baud. As I said, I had no trouble with vs1.0 in the bbs I was xmiting to with the 2.1 version. ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 18 Mon Oct 12, 1987 T.BETTEAU at 04:41 PDT I just downloaded Ultraterm 2.01, and I'm using it now. I must compliment the quthor, this is a very good term program, comparable in a lot of ways to bobsterm pro 128, and I consider that the best term progran I've ever used on a Commodore computer. But this is very close. I especially like the windowed xmodem (haven't tried it yet, tho.) and up/downloading to the buffer. One thing I'd like to see changed, is use a key other than to leave term mode, and go back to menu mode. Perhaps an unused top line key like or . My reasoning for this is that I set my break character on GEnie to ESC (ascii #27) so I could break out by hitting 1 key. Also, it might be nice if pressing the help key showed the quick key command menu. (C=h) I haven't checked this in the docs yet, so I could be wrong, but it appears you can't save control characters in a function key string, that would also be a usefull feature. (I like to force GEnie to full duplex (echo) mode when I logon, that requires a control r. Like this: ^rxjm11890,genie (By the way, that particular genie signup number waives the $18.00 registration fee! :)) ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 19 Mon Oct 26, 1987 DEB at 03:49 EST You can change your GEnie BREAK character to another key if you need to, I personally use a CTRL C. Your selection can be made at the GEnie Setup menu, type SETUP at any page numbered menu! A CTRL C is ASCII 003, and is probably the most common one. It also takes two keys to make, and I can't hit it by mistake...! *deb!* ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 20 Mon Nov 23, 1987 J.RUSSELL1 [Jim Russell] at 19:49 EST Hello All from a GEnie newcomer with a small problem. I recently downloaded Ultraterm, and I really like the way it works. However, I can't get it to download @ 1200 bps (300 works fine). I am using an AT&T 4000 modem (Hayes "compatable") connected to my 128 with an Omnitronix Deluxe interface. I have tried all kinds of parity settings and such, to no avail. Two other programs work fine with this combination (PaperClip II and MicroVT) at 1200, but I would really like to use Ultraterm as my all-around terminal. Is there anything special I should do to the configuration registers in the modem? When I try and download, it looks like the host sends the first block but Ultraterm never responds to the host's liking (judging by the modem's send/receive LED. Then after a short while the d/l aborts. Anyone ever have a similar problem? Any help would be graciously appreciated by me (and indirectly by Steve once I send in my contribution!!!) Thanks again ... Jim Russell ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 21 Tue Nov 24, 1987 DEB at 14:41 EST Jim: first, be sure that your term program is set for NO Parity and 8 bit word lengths, 1 stop bit. The pesky 1200 baud rate factoring is not usually a problem with the 128, so lets start trying to narrow down things. Is your modem set for full duplex? Is this a specific trouble to GEnie...or does it happen on local boards, too? Do you do ANYTHING different at 300 baud than you do at 1200?! *deb!* ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 22 Wed Nov 25, 1987 J.RUSSELL1 [Jim Russell] at 07:07 EST Deb: Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm set at 8/N/1, and the modem is in full duplex. The problem seems to be program-specific, since I'm having the same problem elsewhere (CompuServe and one local board). The only thing I do differently @ 300 is to select that speed from the modem menu. Here's another weird thing: I dug out my ancient, clunky Bell 212a modem (the one the 212a standard is named after) and it allowed me to download. Of course, auto- dialing won't work, which is one of the reasons I shelved it in the first place. I am wondering if perhaps there is something in the command string that Ultraterm sends to the modem when dialing that is confusing the modem somehow. It is supposed to be fully "Hayes compatable" but perhaps not. Hmmm ... the mystery continues ... Jim ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 23 Wed Nov 25, 1987 DEB at 15:33 EST Whoa...I think we'd better wait for Steve to see this then...! I can't think of anything intelligent to ask *deb!* ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 24 Sat Dec 05, 1987 TOXDOC at 00:49 EST I am a major fan of Ultraterm and have registered as a real user. I encourage all of the other users who are still testing it out (for months at a time) to register and suitably encourage the author to continue to come up with upgrades and to negate the bad image of Commodore's shareware potential. The LYNX author is now even writing letters to RUN magazine complaining about the ethics and generosity of C= shareware non-registrants (probably for good reason!) This is too slick a program to let it coast to an ignored death. ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 25 Sun Dec 06, 1987 DEB [*SysOp*] at 01:08 EST Hmmmm, I don't think C= shareware is any more abused than any other kind of computer. Of course, *I* didn't send the LYNX author any money, but I never willingly used LYNX, either. ::smile:: ** ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 27 Mon Dec 07, 1987 BAMAGATOR at 22:57 CST Ultraterm 2.01 downloads great on my 1670 but on my friends TCM-1200H it dls one bad block and then stops. It is like Jim's problem he mentioned earlier. It is set for 8,n,1 and full. Thanks for any advice on this. Also, it displays CARRIER before it gets one in Hayes mode and drops CARRIER when it gets one. In 1670 mode on this modem it displays CARRIER properly. A really great program, but how about a little color to ease the eye strain. Thanks ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 28 Tue Dec 08, 1987 DEB [*SysOp*] at 10:59 EST Aha, the CARRIER item is explainable! The 1670 and the 1660 use a reversed DCD line than the 1650 and most RS232 Interfaces like the VIC 1011/A. It then thinks you HAVE a carrier when ya don't if you are not using a 1670. Surely the author would have allowed you to change modem types and taken the DCD into account, tho?! Is there a 'positive' or 'negative' modem dialing mode?! Or a 1670 and a Hayes mode? Just to further complicate things, the later modems by CBM, the 1670 and 1660, were actually the CORRECT way to implement the carrier detect lines.... When they put a new engineer on the projects, nobody told him that all CBM modems up to that point had been backwards... The solution to the problem may be in a modem parameter on your software, and might also be in a dipswitch on your modem itself. Check the DTR and DCD dipswitches. If the modem requires an RS232 Interface, check to see if the dipswitches on that are set correctly, and again, look for DTR and DCD lines. *deb!* ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 29 Wed Dec 09, 1987 J.RUSSELL1 [Jim Russell] at 19:44 EST To change the modem settings in Ultraterm, type C=M to bring up the modem settings menu. Typing M at this point will cycle you thru the different settings (1650, 1660, Hayes etc.) Then hit ESC to remove the menu page ... Hope this helps --- Jim ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 30 Fri Dec 18, 1987 S.BOERNER at 04:00 EST I haven't checked in here as often as I should. Sorry to hear people are having problems with version 2.01 and some types of modems. I've been hearing from a few other people, by phone and mail, about the same problems. Seems there are some Hayes compatibles out there that aren't very compatible with the program at all. I'd like to solve these problems before the next version comes out. So far it looks like people are having problems with these modems: Mitac, TeleLearning, ADC, AT&T 4000, TCM-1200H, Kyocera KM1200S, and the Omnitronix Deluxe and Peake Peripherals interfaces. Am I missing any? On the other hand, is there anyone using these modems with NO trouble? Most of these modems are supposed to be Hayes compatible, so I'm a little puzzled why they won't work. I would like to contact the manufacturers to see if they can offer any help, and would appreciate it if anyone could post their addresses here, or send me mail (s.boerner). Thanks in advance. SB Deb: Oops! I didn't realize that the 1650 uses a regular carrier detect signal instead of an inverted one like the 1660 and 1670. Hafta fix that one. ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 31 Tue Dec 22, 1987 DEB [*SysOp*] at 22:11 EST Many of the troubles with the TeleLearning modem are because of its auto seek Originate/Answer flip flops. Short of cutting something or another on the PCB itself, there is no 'fix' that I know of for it--you just have to call like 3 or 4 times before you finally get the modem synced enough to the host to connect. This is an AWFUL problem on local BBS's. The Omnitronix interface *can* be set up to reverse the DTR and DCD lines, which causes a lot of trouble if you're not expecting it. Then again, maybe it *always* is set up that way?! <> The ADC modem has non-standard responses and response codes, but last I knew it pulled the DCD thru properly. ((Is this more than ya ever wanted to know or deal with?!)) *deb!* ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 32 Sat Jan 02, 1988 S.BOERNER at 03:15 EST No such thing as too much information! Thanks. It looks like I'm going to have to have a look at the Omnitronix interface, about a half dozen people have contacted me who have had problems with it. May get one from a local dealer. Are the dip switches used to set DCD and DTR? I have been told that there are some internal switches as well. SB ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 33 Tue Mar 01, 1988 L.HARRIS2 at 19:07 PST I have UltraTerm and have tried to use it here on GEnie. Unfortunately, to no avail. I think I have the set-up right. It works fine for me on other boards when I use Punter, but here on GEnie it gives me problems with XMODEM. Has anyone got any ideas as to what I can do about it. I'd love to register with Mr. Boerner but until I can get it to work on GEnie, I feel it is incomplete. I'm using a C-128, 1571/1581 disk drives, and a 1670 modem. It's got me stymied (I'm not a programmer and have a tendency to get lost rather quickly in codes and whatnot). ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 34 Mon Jun 06, 1988 M.SWEENEY at 18:26 PDT Top of the day to you! A fine program steve.... but... a wee problem. It wont let me log on here on Geniein the 1/2 duplex; local echo: 8,N,1 I have translate on, off: differnet modem settings( I use a 1670 ) etc. I CAN log on to CI$ or any BBS. What have I done wrong? Sometimes after trying for 6 or 7 times.. BINGO..I am on instead of getting screen garabage. It prints some funky symbols on the screen( like a baud mismatch ) and shows a carrier but no commincation with genie. Thanks, Mike ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 35 Tue Jun 07, 1988 S.BOERNER at 03:41 EDT Thanks for leaving the note here, Mike. As a matter of fact you are not alone. Other 1670 users have experienced the same problem with version 2.01, including myself. The apparent randomness of the problem made it a tough one to figure out, but I think we have. It occurs after a command string has been sent to the modem several times. And since the program sends a pre-designated command string to the modem each time it dials a number, this can be a problem. Curiously, other Hayes-compatibles don't seem to have this problem. The problem seems to have been solved by resetting the modem, by send- ing the Hayes command 'ATZ', before sending any other commands. I have not experienced ANY of the problems you describe after making this change, which is included in the new version. You can test it yourself by dialing from terminal mode. Enter the terminal, type 'ATE1' to enable modem echo, then enter 'ATZ', a carriage return, and the number ('ATDT' etc.). If you like, check out the demo and see if it works better. SB ------------ Category 15, Topic 20 Message 36 Tue Jun 07, 1988 M.SWEENEY at 20:43 PDT Thanks! I thought I was losing my touch....Since I work in the telecomm field, that would not be a good thing.
