As I recall Readisoft puts one out--but emulators are all limited as to what they will do. What kind of telecom matters do you mean? THANKS! ------------ Category 1, Topic 3 Message 7 Sun Oct 29, 1989 DO-RAE-MI [Ted] at 21:38 EST Ok, J.D., I looked through my collection, but the references go back to the summer of 1988 at the latest. Appaarently there are 2 competing products that emulate the C64 on the Amiga. Both are slow. Both allow some use of peripherals. But from the sound of it (You can watch the ball disappear before the Pak creature eats it, etc.), I doubt you would be able to use either. Both appear to do their best using Basic, which good telecommunications software isn't. At least not if one is going over 300 baud. Both systems require a minimum of 512K. Both are very picky about what they will run according to the various reviews. I think that purchase of either of these products for your purpose is very much a "buyer beware" proposition. (If they won't guarantee it will work with the software in writing or your money back, I'd not buy it unless I had other files to transfer or the like.) The two packages are: The 64 Emulator by Readysoft, Inc. P.O.Box 1222, Lewiston, NY 17092 (phone 416-731-4175) and Go 64! by Software Insight Systems 16E International Drive, East Grandby, Conn. 06026 (203/653-4589) The prices listed (over a year ago) were 39.95 and 69.95 respectively. The interesting folks who have been tagged for selling drugs, general violence & genuine traffic hazard quality? Hell's Angels (they are a CORPORATION these days--I wonder if the rest of the corporations are consulting their lawyers to see if they can erase that blot on the name corporation?) have sued one of the Hollywood studio types for messing around with their registered trademark...Hell's Angels, of course. Only in America, a trademark can only exist as enforceable property rights when it is used in lawful businesses. Use in unlawful business such as drug running, fraud, antitrust violations, etc. is a ground for declaring the mark or former mark once more part of the public domain. It will be interesting to discover whether the Hollywood types will make the argument...'cause the Hollywood types are no angels either & with that kind of charge, turn about is fair play in court, too. Marks of Distinction: "Better than Mom's Meatloaf" is a trademark of the Marriot Corporation. The folks who wrote that one for Marriot should entitle their next book: The Art of Making Enemies. D.O.A. for Halloween "Body by Fisher" You remember that stamped on the side of alal those old cars, don't you? It's also a trademark for cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery owned by (predictably) one Dr. Fisher. The Almighty and the car companies should both have him on their trick list this year. Section 89EZ for tax consulting services. This mark saw the light of day around the time Congress started to move on repealing that section of the Internal Revenue Code--'cause Easy it wasn't! This firm's "trick" came early. "Bury the Habit" for a novelty plastic ashtray resembling a coffin. That trademark says it all. Other Horrors Consider the really frightening things in life: The soul next to you on the airplane has something that's ticking, but it's not a clock. I read the descriptions of the Gif viewer function and was a bit taken aback. I don't recall anyone saying they had used one of the cartridges with a screen save, but with that program that might or might not work. I opened it up and found that the lead from a component was touching the metal shield plate that runs under the circuit board. I took it to a reg'lar TV repair shop, and they fixed it. Changing cartridges without first shutting down the system is, indeed, a major error. Since the cartridge port accesses the address and data buses of the computer directly, inserting and removing cartridges with the power on can affect virtually anything in the computer! You didn't mention in your note whether your nephew was using a color or monochrome monitor/TV. If it's color and you're getting a black screen that is a little different than if it's monochrome with the same symptoms. Also, you neglected to tell me what, besides a monitor/TV you have connected/available. If you have a disk drive, you might try loading a program to see if it works. This info would be very helpful in diagnosing the problem. It tells me whether the problem is limited to the video circuitry/chips or is affecting the entire computer. Do you have access to a logic probe or a voltmeter? If you do, I can give you some help in tracking down the malfunction faster. Without any further info, my initial 'gut' feelings say to suspect the Programmed Logic Array (U17, 82S100) and/or the VIC (U19, 6567). I *knew* I was saving all those little sticky black things for some purpose other than removing pills from sweaters. ------------ ************ Topic 6 Tue Jul 26, 1988 BHUDGENS (Forwarded) Sub: JiffyDos 128 info wanted Have seen several ads for the new JiffyDos/128 and also for the 64. Would like to hear from others that may have purchased this before I put out the big bucks. Am in need of upgrading my ROMs in the 18 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 21, Topic 6 Message 15 Fri Oct 20, 1989 H.HERMAN1 at 18:14 EDT Bill, Could you tell me, using Jiffy/DOS, how long it takes to load Pocket Writer2, and BTP128? Loading the protected Writer2 (128) from a #1571, including the configure file, and until I get a blinking cursor now takes 34 seconds. Loading BTP128 from a #1581, including its colorful intro-screen now takes 23 seconds, (does not include time for autostart configuration file). I was wondering how much improvement could be expected with Jiffy installed? Howie ------------ Category 21, Topic 6 Message 16 Sat Oct 21, 1989 C128-BILL [SYSOP] at 18:18 EDT Howie, Going back to my std BTPro disk (on the '71) I had these times: W/O Jiffy - 1:16 With Jiffy: 0:47 using my 'resaved' faster BTPro (w/o title screen) W/O Jiffy - 0:41 With Jiffy: 0:35 I don't think you will see a significant increase times in load and save on the '81. I have not finished my evaluation for adjusting the interleave value, but maybe Dale has some information for you. ------------ Category 21, Topic 6 Message 17 Mon Oct 23, 1989 H.HERMAN1 at 23:06 EDT Bill, Thanks for the info! I am a bit surprised at the figs for BTP. If I take out the title screen, the load time comes down to 21 seconds on the #1581. [The screen takes up two seconds, but then gives me something to watch for the remaining 21.] Quess I'll just have to wait for Ramlink and HD series HD, to speed things up a bit. Have you heard if there will be a way to get around the Pocket2 protection on the HD? [Not its data files, but the programs themselves?] Howie ------------ Category 21, Topic 6 Message 18 Thu Oct 26, 1989 C128-BILL [SYSOP] at 07:40 EDT Howie, I just took my '71 off-line due to several loud noises, similar to a cement mixer, so I'm not sure if those load times are good. I'll re-align it and re-time. ------------ ===END===
