Two of our California people, Deb & Digital.Doc are ok. As you get back on line, those of you from the quake region, please check & let us know you are ok. Worried, Ted ------------ Category 1, Topic 18 Message 2 Tue Oct 17, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 22:40 PDT Just as an info subject, here is the latest from San Francisco! At this time, there is limited access to the city and the south bay. Three out of four routes in and out are closed. The bay bridge (connecting SF and Oakland) has had a major collapse of the upper level. This major artery into and out of SF is going to be closed for a fair amount of time. A section about 30-50 feet long has dropped from the upper level to the lower level closing the bridge to traffic both inbound and outbound. Interstate 880 has collapsed where there is an upper and lower level. At this time they are reporting approximately 50 casualties from this event. This is a major artery in the SF San Jose area and will result in extensive traffic problems in the area. Repairs to this Interstate will probably require a considerable amount of time. The third game of the world series has been post-poned and will probably not be played tomorrow due to structural damage in both stadiums. Personnel working in SF have been asked to call in to see if their presense is needed before heading into the city. The two major problems currently facing the bay area are (1) Fires breaking out mostly due to ruptured gas lines, and (2) lack of water in SF. The major feed line from Oakland to SF was broken and numerous smaller feed lines have been broken. In order to fight fires, and to attempt to restore service, Many areas will be out of water for drinking for approximately 72 hours. Bay area hospitals are all functioning well, but request that routine visits be cancelled in order to allow doctors to deal with emergancy patients. Phone service in the Bay area is limited. Various areas have no service and others are experiencing difficulty getting through. Casualties have been minimal throughout the area. Looting has been limited to very small areas and is under control. The Red Cross assistance numbers are SF 415-776-1500, Oakland/East Bay 415- 533-2321. The current death toll appears to be between 100-200, but the count is still coming in. ------------ Category 1, Topic 18 Message 3 Tue Oct 17, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 22:51 PDT More News! Most of the outlying areas have received minimal damage. With the epicenter located approx 30 miles north of San Jose, transportation is still confused. The stopping of the World series, with a capacity crowd of about 45000 put a strain on the road system. However, some people decided to camp out at the stadium parking lot. Information regarding emergancy procedures is being deseminated by both the TV and radio people. According to the lt. gov. the worst damage he's seen is in Watsonville. The worst lose of life is in Oakland. Lt. Gov Leo Mc Carthy is prepared to declare a state of emergancy in the bay area. Most schools in the bay area will be closed for at least one day. ------------ Category 1, Topic 18 Message 4 Tue Oct 17, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 23:09 PDT The latest news is that the figures on the collapse of highway 880 is really closer to 6 than it is to 200. Great News, if true! If any after shocks occur there is a good possibility that more of the freeway will collapse. Lt. Gov. McCarthy has announced the availability of approx $1 Million in funds as aid to the affected area. No announcement has come from the federal government to the minute. ------------ Category 1, Topic 18 Message 5 Tue Oct 17, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 23:19 PDT Another update: The Army from the Presidio has been recalled to assist in the general emergancy. In addition, Alameda Naval Air Station has sent out a general recall of all personnel. Mare Island Naval Shipyard has not yet had a general recall. Looting is still apparently under control. However, traffic in and out of SF remains a major concern! ------------ Category 1, Topic 18 Message 6 Wed Oct 18, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 21:18 PDT Hello again! Here's a sampling of the newest info straight from SF: Most areas have had phone and electric service restored. The exception is the waterfront district which is still having problems. AT&T has announced that it is restricting the number of calls into the 415 area code. The reason for this is to allow local residents to call out. If you're trying to get through, be patient. Just keep trying. You should get through eventually. A hint: If you know someone in the 707 area code, they have a better chance (slightly) of getting through. Water is still a large concern for many areas; however, the situation is improving hour by hour. As the last of the fires dies out, water is more available. For those experiencing water shortages, many local agencies have banded together to provide emergancy water. The World Series will be played in Oakland. Candlestick Park is still suffering from damage. However, no specific date for the next game has been set. My best estimate is Thursday the 19th or Friday the 20th. There are too many factors to be considered to be sure. The latest estimate on repair of the Bay Bridge is three weeks. The Army Corp of Engineers is on the scene and is planning to lift the fallen section of roadway, repair it, and re-install it. Also noted today is the fact that the ramp section right next to the fallen section is no longer attached to the pylons. Apparently, the quake snapped the bolts holding it to the pylons. Of major concern is the possibility of an after shock. The worry is that an after shock might cause this other section to fall also, delaying repair of the bridge. A crane on a barge was brought out to attempt to lift the fallen section, but it turned out to be 20 feet too short for the job. The crane was returned to its berth at Alemeda where an additional 20+ feet are to be added. In the meantime, traffic is horrendous! Many government employees are being told to stay home to ease the traffic problems. Members of the military services in the area have been requested to assist in the clean-up effort. The initial groups involved came from the presidio and Alameda Naval Air Station. Other area military bases are providing assistance as requested. Many local groups have banded together to provide food and other needed supplies to the people of SF. Blood, food, blanket, flashlight, and contribution drives have sprung up almost everywhere. The people of the bay area have banded together to help each other. Still kicking in SF... ------------ Category 1, Topic 18 Message 7 Thu Oct 19, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 21:18 PDT World Series Update... The Stick is back on!!! Latest news reports say the next game of the World Series will be played in Candlestick Park on Tuesday! Judging by the info I've received so far, this is still iffy, but a better than average rumor. Who's to blame department... A discouraging note from San Francisco.... The boys in the know are now busy trying to assess the blame for the collapse of I880. The rumor about town is that the big boys of California knew that I880 was unfit long before the earthquake and, in fact, had gotten funds to repair it, but used them for other purposes. This reminds me of the typical politician BS! If its true, its too late for recriminations. If not, let's stop the mud slinging! Talk about law suit preparation! To try and place the blame on one individual for this disaster is to set the stage for chaos. Who's responsible for a house burning down? The owner? The guy who built it 20 years ago? If there's any fault to be laid, let's put it where it belongs... right at our own feet! We elected them...We didn'tt check on what was happening...We, the residents of Northern California, are as responsible as any elected official! This attitude sickens me! Let's assign the blame for the earthquake and the loss of life to someone...That way we can all sue them for it. ------------ Category 1, Topic 18 Message 8 Sat Oct 21, 1989 DO-RAE-MI [Ted] at 22:05 EDT & the little darlings elected in California, like the little darlings elected in every other state are immune to suit for such little activities. The Earthquake in California stopped a World Series game, which is more than wars have done and as much as rain. (You try to figure out this world, not me!) After the earthquake, it seems some sections of fearless fans decided to take up the immortal chant of "Let's Play Ball! Let's Play Ball!" And I thought no West Coast fans could be like that! In fact, I thought only Cincinnati Reds fans could be like that....Well it only goes to show that a ball "fan" is still an abbreviation of "fanatic". Online, the earthquake has caused computer users to turn to their computers (of course) once the power came back on to tell others they are ok. Calling out long distance might be impossible, but a local call to a GEnie node & hence to GEnie RTs & GEniemail soon was quite possible. Channel 11 on CB had a number of folks asking about loved ones & passing messages to out of state family & friends. Electronic Neighbors taking care of each other...Loaning the cup of electronic sugar in time of need. One kind soul even called an Aunt in California--yes she's fine and rather amused that the caller talked to me by *computer*. Funny to remember not all of us have entered the silicon century and will find that fact more noteworthy than an earthquake--she's used to those. On the LIghter Side: Some bright soul has started making humorous novelty figurines and using the trademarks "Glitch" and "The Original Computer Glitch". Hmmm Wonder what the doll looks like? Someone bumbling on an abacus? The spark of electronic destruction instead of the spark of life to Adam ala Michelangelo? UNCLE WALT'S is the current mark for a line of spices and seasonings. Say, Walt, why didn't you TELL us you started a new business??? ;> Groaners: HASH PUPPIES as a trademark for corned beef hash nuggets EWEGURT as a mark for sheepsmilk yogurt. The I Can't Stand It Dept. Some Bright, Light soul now has a mark composed of a Cartoon character, male in tights & cape (Yeah, like the one I never could understand how Superman managed to avoid catching in doors) called Captain Recyle. GAG, COUGH, CHOKE. Fine literature produced Captains Courageous, TV produced Capt. Video (original name, huh?) and Capt. Kangaroo (were you disappoinnted when he turned out NOT to have a long tail & hop? I was once upon a time.) Cereals produced Capt. Crunch (sweet but a little soggy a little soon) and an angry view became Capt. Midnight (ah the criminal charges vs. the electronic ones.) Somehow I suspect I could have lived my mortal span quite comfortably without Capt. Recycle to pollute my sight. Sigh. I could have endured anotherr month without snow, too...however that too was not to be. ------------ Category 2, Topic 10 Message 33 Sat Oct 21, 1989 DO-RAE-MI [Ted] at 22:53 EDT The newspapers in the Cincinnati, Ohio area, have noted that certain local politicos in the region have been under investigation for favoritism in granting public contracts (kind words). The midwest area-Indiana, Ohio, etc.-have had some snow this week... cold, wet, heavy to shovel, 4 inches & up snow this week. There are broken tree branches & power lines everywhere. The tree surgeons are so busy that only 1 in 7 calls could be answered in a given day & they have been moving the stuff out of the way & letting true attention to the trees go til later. The Power companies are in BAD repute. In a number of areas 1 of 6 people/businesses had no power. The phone company got things back together in 48 hours, which is why the power company has gotten LOTS of nasty phone calls lately. The snow melted & this weekend, the sound of the power saw is heard throughout the land. ------------ ************ Topic 17 Sun Jul 09, 1989 H.HERMAN1 at 16:15 EDT Sub: WOC's World of Commodore shows: Where and when are they? 26 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 2, Topic 17 Message 26 Sat Oct 14, 1989 E.G.BELL at 09:25 EDT jake: There will be an 80 column capability for Bell Term which will support vt52 initially and perhaps eventually some degree of vt100. You might want to call Supra and see if you can pry some documentation for your modem loose from them. I can't imagine a modem that cannot be set for half or full duplex. Remember, that "control-R" at logon should be considered a temporary fix while waiting for docs ... it does odd things to your local node that GEnie may not be able to deal with, particularly in up- or down- loading. When my modem comes, I'll post the command here. Allow 4-6 weeks for delivery, of course ;) ------------ Category 8, Topic 10 Message 5 Sun Oct 15, 1989 O.AMADOR [Orlando] at 08:08 EDT Seting the Supra 2400 modem to work at half duplex should be done just like any other modem. When the computer opens a channel to the modem, it sends two control numbers to specify the baud, parity, stop bits, and full or half duplex mode. Your terminal program should have an option to allow to work in full or half duplex. Some people prefers to work at full duplex and turn the local echo on, that way they can have control over the echo even in the middle of the session. Your terminal program should be able to use one of this options, if not it is time to seriosly think about geting another terminal program, I am sure there is some good terminal programs right here on the flagship's software library. ------------ Category 8, Topic 10 Message 6 Sun Oct 15, 1989 C128-BILL [SYSOP] at 12:25 EDT The Supra Command for Echo is E1. ATE1 should set it, and is default for the Supra 2400. Some modems use ATF (like the Capetronic), but Supra uses AT&F to reset the factory configuration. There is a file in the FlagShip library called MODEM.INF that has most of the AT commands. ------------ Category 8, Topic 10 Message 7 Mon Oct 16, 1989 O.AMADOR [Orlando] at 18:30 EDT The command ATE1 on the Supra 2400 is for "Modem Echoes Commands to terminal". What this means is that if you issue this command, you'll be able to see the commands that you type when you are in command mode ATE1 is the default factory value. If you issue the command ATE0 then you won't be able to see the commands, but you can still see the result. I just tested this with my Supra 2400 right now, and I don't think that ATE1 will be a solution. A far as I can see, you still have to either put the modem in half duplex mode(when you open RS232 channel) or turn on the local echo. ------------ Category 8, Topic 10 Message 8 Mon Oct 16, 1989 C128-BILL [SYSOP] at 22:22 EDT Drat! THIS BELONGS TO MY NEPHEW AND I FEEL THAT HE POSSIBLY INSERTED GAMES INTO THE GAME/CARTRIDGE PORT WHILE THE COMPUTER WAS POWERED UP. THE MAIN SYMPTOM IS THAT THE MONITOR SCREEN DOES RECIEVE SOME VIDEO IT CLEARS ITSELF OF SNOW AND GOES BLACK. THE THIN IS THAT THE MESSAGE ABOUT "FREE BYTES" AND THE CURSOR/READY MESSAGE DO NOT APPEAR. THERE IS A BLANK SCREEN ONLY. I HAVE A SAMS FOR THE 64, BUT, TO REPLACE ALL THE CHIPS SUGGESTED, IT WOULD BE EASIER TO REBUILD THE COMPUTER. I AM HOPING A USER OUT THERE WOULD HAVE HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM AND COULD LEND SOME ASSISTANCE, ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. ------------ Category 11, Topic 39 Message 2 Sun Oct 22, 1989 DIGITAL.DOC at 09:32 PDT Hi DR, OUCH! Changing cartridges without first shutting down the system is, indeed, a major error. Since the cartridge port accesses the address and data buses of the computer directly, inserting and removing cartridges with the power on can affect virtually anything in the computer! You didn't mention in your note whether your nephew was using a color or monochrome monitor/TV. If it's color and you're getting a black screen that is a little different than if it's monochrome with the same symptoms. Also, you neglected to tell me what, besides a monitor/TV you have connected/available. If you have a disk drive, you might try loading a program to see if it works. This info would be very helpful in diagnosing the problem. It tells me whether the problem is limited to the video circuitry/chips or is affecting the entire computer. Do you have access to a logic probe or a voltmeter? If you do, I can give you some help in tracking down the malfunction faster. Without any further info, my initial 'gut' feelings say to suspect the Programmed Logic Array (U17, 82S100) and/or the VIC (U19, 6567). Looking forward to hearing from you... ------------ No messages found in category #12 ************ Topic 10 Sat Oct 14, 1989 LEL at 16:05 EDT Sub: 1571 power supply Trying to find a 1571 power supply which will run on either 110 or 1220 volts. 2 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 17, Topic 10 Message 1 Sat Oct 14, 1989 LEL at 16:07 EDT HI- Does anyone knof anyone who vends a 1571 power supply that will run on either 110 or 220 volts? Lloyd ------------ Category 17, Topic 10 Message 2 Sun Oct 15, 1989 H.HERMAN1 at 19:02 EDT Lloyd, Suggest you take a look at the Run Class Ads, and especially those in the most recent RUN, November '89. A number of service stations adver- tise availability of power supplies. Or, you might want to give North Coast Programming, in Cleveland (well, actually a suburb), a call. They are an authorized Commodore Service Center, and stock just about everything. I have used North Coast Programming a number of times for upgrades, and parts. What- ever I have needed always seems to be in stock, and I usually get it within a few days, here in New York. No disclaimors here. I highly recommend North Coast! Loading the protected Writer2 (128) from a #1571, including the configure file, and until I get a blinking cursor now takes 34 seconds. Loading BTP128 from a #1581, including its colorful intro-screen now takes 23 seconds, (does not include time for autostart configuration file). I was wondering how much improvement could be expected with Jiffy installed? Howie ------------ Category 21, Topic 6 Message 16 Sat Oct 21, 1989 C128-BILL [SYSOP] at 18:18 EDT Howie, Going back to my std BTPro disk (on the '71) I had these times: W/O Jiffy - 1:16 With Jiffy: 0:47 using my 'resaved' faster BTPro (w/o title screen) W/O Jiffy - 0:41 With Jiffy: 0:35 I don't think you will see a significant increase times in load and save on the '81. I have not finished my evaluation for adjusting the interleave value, but maybe Dale has some information for you. ------------ 1 ?
