They are as follows: 1) The 1581 fast loader (file "FL81!") is trashed. Replace it with "FLNO!" until you get your original replaced. 2) the "Quick File Copier" will, in some cases, falsely detect Ram Expansion and attempt to use it. 3) the GEOS parameter menu crashes but can be fixed easily by the user: a) boot the UPGRADES disk b) insert side 2 of the Maverick master disk and hit (make sure you do this on a copy!) c) select "GEOS PARM MENU" and HOLD DOWN the key to enter the configuration edit screen. d) Press "E" to edit and hit until the cursor is sitting in the first EMPTY "load file" slot. e) enter the file name "MAVTSL", press until the cursor disappears (i.e. "edit" mode is terminated) then press "S" to re-save the boot file. That will take care of that problem. 4) "GEOBOOT 128" is totally trashed and must be replaced by sending in your master disk to SSI. Thanks:) Doug ------------ Category 1, Topic 54 Message 6 Mon Jun 11, 1990 WC.COLEMAN [*Sysop*] at 21:41 EDT OK, here's the info. One disclaimer: I'm babysitting tonight so I'm not about to take my computer apart! I can't give you the exact position of the pads but they are not hard to find. 1) Put a scrap disk (or the cardboard insert that came with the computer) into the drive so you won't bounce the heads to death. 2) Take the case off the computer. There are screws in the back. The cover slides back and lifts up. 3) Remove the drive mechanics. It's only held in by a few screws. You'll also have to remove the handle. It just pulls off. Don't disconnect any wires, once you get it loose simply flip it to the side. 4) The drive electronics are on the motherboard directly under the drive mechanics. Look for the two pads in the center of this area. They look like two small half-circles with a small bridge in the center. If you trace each pad you will see that one side goes to ground and the other back to one of the VIA's (6522's) pin 15 or 16 (depending on which pad). In fact if you can't find the pads but you can locate the VIA (there are 2) trace those pins back and you'll find the pads. 5) Now take a sharp knife or razor and cut the bridge that connects the two halfs of each pad. 6) Next cut 4 pieces of hookup wire about 18'' long. Solder one end of each wire to each half of the pads. Make sure you don't solder across the halves. 7) For switches you can use two micro toggles (a' la Radio Shack) or slide switches. I used a PCB micro-switch (a little blue thingy with four slide switches on it. 8) For each switch solder the pair of wires from one pad to each side of the switch (don't cross the wires!). 9) Now drill a hole in the computer in a convienient spot (mine's mounted just below and to the right of the power light) and mount the switches. 10) Put 'er back together and try it out! ------------ Category 1, Topic 54 Message 7 Tue Jun 12, 1990 C128-BILL at 16:55 EDT Thanx, Bill. Have you- all heard of it? It is without a doubt one of the finest pieces of PD software ever created for the C-64. The author, Robert Stoerrle, picked up where Craig Chamberlain left off with The Enhanced Sidplayer. Stereo Editor allows you to compose for up to six voices at a time and has a ton of other features, including MIDI support. Stere Editor is completely compatible with all the Enhanced Sidplayer commands. Because Robert wanted Craig to receive his due on the Enhanced Sidplayer (and to avoid being sued by Compute! ;-), you MUST own a copy of the Enhanced Sidplayer to use Stereo Editor -- it requires a file from the E.S. disk in order to operate. At this point, C-64/128 Kermit v2.2 is the only one which really does the job for the C-64. There are others that have partial implementations, but they are often buggy. (Note: Kermit doesn't do soft scrolling or double high/wide...) For the C-128, C-64/128 Kermit v2.2 does fine (it actually runs in C-64 mode but can use the 128's 80-column screen). Desterm v1.02 is also very dgood, as is CBM's VT-100/128 v2.1. All the others we have worked with have some problems. (Note: VT-100/128 does not emulate the VT-100's VT-52 mode.) If anyone is interested in testing VT-100 emulators on their own, there is a PD program called VT-Test, written in C, that we use. I could probably upload it here is anyone is interested. It is really a torture test and exposes bugs in what look to be bullet-proof programs... It can be compiled on most any system and works great on any Unix box. Properly, 4 & 5 should be crossed. However, some devices don't use 4 & 5 while others depend on them. PC serial ports usually want to see pin 5 high. If a the attached device (say, a Commodore) doesn't put pin 4 high, then the PC will refuse to send to it. Therefore, we can fool them both by looping back their OWN pin 4 to their own pin 5. Pin 8 is Carrier Detect. Again, some terminal programs don't pay any attention to CD. Some modems will hold pin 8 high all the time. Some modems hold pin 8 high ONLY if it is properly synched with another modem's carrier. My C=64's serial port seems to ignore most of this stuff.
