The "GG" prefix identifies the file as a crunched (disk space and download time saving) Koala picture file. Library 23 contains a program entitled "Crunch/Un/Print", number 5760, which will let you view GG files or print them with a Gemini10X or compatible printer in a 16 level greyscale. It also will expand a GG file to a standard Koala file or crunch a standard Koala to a GG file. "JJ" files are crunched Doodle (DD) picture files. Crunch/Un/Print provides the same services for Doodle files as it does for Koala ones. If you have any further questions, let me know! I have done just what you area asking, only I use a Toshiba LapTop to direct connect to my system and I have put an A/B switch between the C64 and my Hayes SM2400 modem. That way all I have to do is flip the switch and start a script file on the LapTop - it sends the codes the BBS requires and the cables are made to force a fake carrier detect (pins 20 of one end is connected to pin 8 of the other - DTR to DCD, pins 2 and 3 also nulled out) flipping the A/B switch connects both machines and simulates a carrier detect. The script file sends the CONNECT 2400 that the Hayes would have sent should the call really came in over a modem. Anyway, none of this may apply depending on the BBS software you are using - your best bet is to contact your BBS software author for the support you deserve. Architecture has been radically changed: the processor is a 6509, memory is bank switched, and zero page is significantly different from that of other models. "The cassette buffer is no longer at $0330, so that the examples given in this book will need to be moved to a new part of RAM (addresses $0400 to $07FF are available). Bank switching is more complex than on other models. Beginners will find that there are more things to be kept track of in this machine. If possible, beginners should try to find a simpler computer on which to take their first steps. "Implementation of large-scale programs require setting up a "transfer sequence" program to link the program's memory bank to that of the kernal. Usually, a bootstrap program will be needed to set everything up. "A machine language monitor is built into this line of machines. I am in the midst of completing several new Pocket Filer2 reports for a portfolio data base, and find the command listings as flexible to work with as those available in dBASEII. Using only the "totals" or summary page for printing, logic and math in records can provide some pretty complex analysis, comparisons, etc. The nicest part of it all, is the "if, elseif, else", which I found very comfortable with "nestings" to a level of at least five. [Further nesting just wasn't needed.] It makes it very easy to pick out categories of items from a data base for comparison and review. Especially, when you can say, for example, if this, and if that, and if those, and if these, but not if them, do a few hundred calculations within fractions of a second, and have your comparatives ready and waiting. Filer2 certainly seems up to task, whether it is keeping a simple mailing base of a couple thousand names, or analysing portfolios for diversification results, and tax consequences. Or, just to generate an "address" file for personal (read: no form) letters to save time and typing of routine correspondence. Oh! And while I am talking about good product for the C-128, take a look at "Persage". If you ever wanted a calendar/diary/memo generator/calculater/messenger/telephone book/and a whole lot more, in one convenient package, which is designed to run on most all configurations of C-128 systems, this is the one to get. It will even open and run from its own partitions on a #1581, and on my sys with 5 drives, find its own way to its special section set up for it! I haven't missed an appointment since getting this wonder. And, for the linguists among us, it will even speak French. The original software was written for a main frame multi-user sys, and was custom written for the C-128, keeping all of its features. This is available from Sydesco, Lte., 6266 rue Louvois, St-Leonard, Quebec, CANADA H1P 1L8. Trust me on this one! It is equal in quality to the likes of BTP128, and that is saying a lot! Quoth the Hardware Collector Curiously, Ted ------------ Category 18, Topic 8 Message 2 Mon Jun 19, 1989 COLOR64BBS [Greg Pfountz] (Forwarded) I have a question for anyone who knows the Super Snapshot cartridge. I personally do not own one of these fine cartridges, but as the author of Color 64 BBS, many of my customers are asking me to help them fix a problem they are having. What is happening is when they initally load the BBS, the cartridge is being disabled. If they re-enable the cart after the software is loaded, all future loads of the program overlays work just fine. What I suspect is the initial autoboot techinque that I am using is disabling their cartridges. I use the technique that overwrites some of the vectors starting at decimal 796. When the short ML file is finished loading, the vector at 796 (kernal Close) is pointing at my small routine to start the BBS up. What I suspect is happening is the load vector is also being overwritten (as you would suspect at decimal 816). I tried making a custom boot file that has the proper load vector for the SS cartridge in the boot program (as determined by peeking those locations after an initial power on with the SS cart in place), hoping this would keep the cart from being disabled - but when I had some of the guys try it they reported the same problem. Anyway, if any of this makes any sense to any of you, please share your ideas. If we have no luck here, Scott Cargill indicated he may be will to send me his cartridge in the next few weeks so I can have a little one on one with that cart. Well, a drive is a drive - sakes alive! The MAGIC of the Lt. Kernal or the FastTrak product is the DOS and the Host-adaptor. Already, several users have done so, and I believe some are using the drive for BOTH products. That was my impression, anyway. Lloyd ------------ Category 20, Topic 6 Message 33 Thu Jun 22, 1989 XETEC at 09:49 CDT Here, Let me clear the air a bit... the Lt. Kernal drive can be converted to a FastTrak Jr. drive by simply using the FastTrak Host Adaptor and the FastTrak boot disk. The drive could be converted back for use with the Lt. Kernal system by re-Sysgening ( first with 7.0 then with 7.1 ) You cannot have data for both computer systems on the drive at the same time because both systems need to have block 0 on the hard drive. ( The Lt. Kernal needs a lot of space at the very lowest blocks, the fasttrak needs block 0 and everything is relative ( offset ) from there. When switching between the systems, you will need to change the 25pin "D" connector for the system that will now be using the drive. There is a program on Lloyds BBS named "CLEARDOSLU" which should eliminate the need to sysgen with DOS 7.0 first ( before 7.1 ) but I haven't personally used this program. Tony ------------ Category 20, Topic 6 Message 34 Fri Jun 23, 1989 LT.KERNAL [Lloyd S.] at 07:20 EDT Ok, Tony. That clears up the case a little more than when I saw you last in Philly. How 'bout if our first 'homework' project is a routine to MOVE the Lt. Kernal block 0 info elsewhere on the drive so that the FastTrak system can use it? THEN all we need is a FastTrak routine to do the same thing.....
