Full 4 drive support, Ram drive priority system, two windows for displaying file listings, one click access to all major file functions, comprehensive error reports, multiple user options, and compatibility with the Desk Top and GateWay are some of the features that make Dual Top the premier Desk Top replacement. Dual Top provides full four drive support when an REU is present. Disk and file functions can be performed on all of the four drives. You can even run your applications from C and D. Since Configure does not support four drives, the fourth drive can be added from within Dual Top. The Ram Drive Priority was designed to take full advantage of your Ram Drives. When a data file is double clicked, the Ram Drive will always be searched first for the parent application. This feature allows you to have totally different configurations than were previously possible. Dual Top uses a split window system for displaying your files. By using this method the user has a larger perspective into the system. The windows may be used independently or together for copying files between two drives. Each window can hold 144 files (the maximum allowed in GEOS) and displays up to 16 files at a time. The most commonly used file functions are activated by the buttons located in the middle of the screen. With this setup, it only takes a single click of the mouse to activate the function. Dual Top's error reports do not leave you out in the cold. When an error is detected during a disk or file operation, the following information is given to help you pinpoint the location of the error: the disk name, the file name, the track and sector where the error occurred and a description of the error. This information allows the user to repair disks that show errors during validation. With Dual Top's greater perspective you no longer have to return to the drive that the last application was run from. Dual Top can be configured to list the directory of any of the four drives when Dual Top is entered. This is particularly handy if you use separate drives for data and applications. You would just set up Dual Top to automatically list the files on your data drive so that you can immediately select another file from your data disk. The Auto Overwrite option allows you to disable the "Ok to overwrite file?" dialog box. This option allows you to back up multiple files from the REU to disk without having to approve every copy. To help search through large file listings you can sort them by name. Dual Top can be set up to automatically sort the files when a disk is opened or you can turn the sorting off and sort disks as needed with a single key stroke. Dual Top is completely compatible with the Desk Top and GateWay. Dual Top can be run from both the Desk Top and GateWay by double clicking on Dual Top's file name or icon. You can also run the Desk Top or GateWay from Dual Top by double clicking on it's file name just like any other application. The above features are what make Dual Top the premier alternative to the Desk Top. Geo Tet and VDC Tet Tet is a full color game of logic and skill. The goal of the game is to keep the pieces from stacking up to the top of the screen. To accomplish this you must form complete lines across the game field. When a complete line is formed it is removed from the game. There are 7 pieces that can be rotated and shifted to form the lines. Tet also features multiple game options. The "Option" control box allows you to adjust the number of starting lines, the speed that the pieces are dropped and the speed of advancing lines. By mixing the different options the game difficulty can be adjusted to match your skill level. The keyboard controls are set up for left or right handed players. Geo Solitaire and VDC Solitaire Solitaire is a full color version of the game "Klondike". The goal of the game is to end with all of the suits in sequential order at the top of the screen. Solitaire also features multiple decks to choose from. Geo Solitaire features a 3 color pointer in the shape of a hand that actually "picks up" the cards and moves them in real time. VDC Solitaire features 640x440 resolution that allows for very detailed cards. Checkerboard The Checkerboard is a full color automated checkerboard. There are no rules and no computer player so you can play any game that can be played on a real checkerboard. Pieces can be moved in any way you want. You can remove the pieces from the board, add new pieces to the board and stack two pieces to "king" a checker. When you point and click on a checker, the piece is picked up and moved in real time. Lace II Lace II is a 128 only picture display program. Lace can display GeoPaint, IPaint and Basic8 picture formats. GeoPaints can be displayed in the following resolutions: 640x400, 640x498 and 640x592. IPaint is a 640x400 format. The following Basic8 formats are supported: 640x200 - 640x500 picture size, 8x2, 8x4, 8x8, 8x16 and monochrome color formats. All displays are in full color. The GeoPaint pictures have a color correction option that will simulate the 64 screen colors when activated. System Requirements All of the applications in the Landmark Series require GEOS V2.0. 64 Dual Top requires an REU to be able to use different drive types and 4 drive support. For example, you cannot use a 1541 and a 1581 without an REU. GeoTet, Geo Solitaire and Checkerboard are 40 column applications that require a Commodore 64 or a Commodore 128 with at least one drive. 128 Dual Top requires a Commodore 128 with at least 1 drive and a 80 column monitor. 128 Dual Top does not require an REU to use multiple drive types but does require the REU for 4 drive support. VDC Tet, VDC Solitaire and Lace II all require a Commodore 128 with 64K of VDC RAM with an 80 column monitor. Excepting the fact that I haven't done any testing or viewing of the DUALTOPS. I have my system setup with RAMLink and just didn't look into what I might have to do with my setup. (BTW.. I got it a couple of DAYS ago, check might already be there to you. This is usually a knop recessed and hidden in the back of most monitors. What you want to do is "squish" the picture on the screen slightly. Turn this knop lightly and with care, if you have a plastic screw driver you are better off using this. ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 7 Thu Jul 30, 1992 P.MURDAUGH at 19:42 EDT You hit the nail on the head JBEE. Some monitors to need some coaxing to get the picture from scrolling when in 640x598 mode. Steve, as for using Dual Top with your ramlink, you will need to continue to use your GateWay boot disk unless you are using the Ramlink configure file created by Jim Collette that allows the Ram Link to be used a regular geos RAM drives. To have Dual Top take control of the system at boot just place Dual Top and Dual Boot onto the GateWay boot disk. You can also run Dual Top from GateWay if you prefer. ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 8 Thu Jul 30, 1992 P.MURDAUGH at 19:44 EDT J.Herndon1, I am not sure if your comment was directed to me. (finaly have 8 megs on the RAMCard) Prior, to the SIMMs and still included is my 1.5 meg REU (which for some reason, I can't have the last 0.5 meg config'ed, so only accessing 1 meg of REU.. for a GRAND TOTAL of 9 megs) So far I have only 2 native partitions (one to use the entire REU partition (1) ..then one larger partition ..leaving perhaps 4 megs free (not sure, just sorta randomly increased block count) (( I'll need to check the CMD RL & Gateway areas for suggestions )) Steve Craik ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 10 Tue Aug 04, 1992 P.MURDAUGH at 20:17 EDT Hmmm, My 1084S handled the 592 display just fine after ajusting the screen height. If you have tried all the adjustments and it still will not stop scrolling then I would guess that you vertical hold is slightly off. My 1084S did not have a vertical hold ajustment on the outside of the monitor so I can not say how you would go about ajusting it. ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 11 Fri Aug 14, 1992 F.MCCOWAN at 01:11 EDT Paul, ps Paul I have not yet ordered your product, but I am about to. ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 12 Fri Aug 14, 1992 P.MURDAUGH at 19:42 EDT Great! I'm still having trouble with the configuring of drive D. with DUAL TOP V3.0. My system... 128 D w/1571 (8), 1581 (9), 1581 (10), RAMLink (12) w/REU (RAMDISK- 1571). Software geoWizard & Move RLtime, 128 Config RL (Jim Collette) norboot Rboot and DualTopv3.0 ..I'd prepared GEOS with RL/RD Set Up from CMD. Everytime I get to trying config'n for D: with DualTopV3.0 I get a dialog box stating to insert in any drive, a disk containing: 128 CONFIGURE V2.0 or higher. What has got me wondering is.. the manner in which that message appears. I've looked at 128 CONFIG RL, RENAMED to 128 CONFIGURE V2 (thats all that seems to fit, plus some variations of that. Plus, went so far as to rename the permanant name in the INFO from "128 Config V2.1" to some other variations. ..and NO WORKIE, and then after doing that config wouldn't even work. What am I doing wrong?? are my drive numbered incorrectly..?? Hmm? Steve Craik ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 24 Sun Oct 18, 1992 CMD-DOUG at 21:30 EDT It should just be named '128 CONFIGURE'. That should do it. ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 25 Sun Oct 18, 1992 P.MURDAUGH at 22:09 EDT [CSteve, the first thing you need to do is to rename your RL COnfigure file to "128 CONFIGURE". Dual Top will then be able to get the device drivers it needs to set up the fourt drive. Second. The drive that you are adding as the fourth drive MUST be set to device 11. If you have any more questions just let me know. ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 26 Tue Oct 20, 1992 J.ROBBINS16 [JBUS] at 05:22 EDT One more thing he missed, as per the RD/RL SET-UP documents, RamLink has to be device #16, it'll be swapped to match 9 (B) or 10 (C) when he boots up. So if he's already got a device 9 it'll foul up the directories if he wants to change partitions at anytime, or add a fouth drive. should be 1571 (8), 1581 (10), 1581 (11), RamLink (16). That's the set-up I use lately with no problems. ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 27 Wed Oct 21, 1992 S.CRAIK [Steve] at 00:47 EDT Hi ALL, Thanks for the info! I'll rename 128 CONFIG RL to 128 CONFIGURE and change my RL's default device # to 16. I do have it as 12 for GEOS. I change it for CP/M and CS-DOS1.5 to device 11. For some reason I have to have it at 11 for CP/M. Maybe a bad attempt, I will try it with the device as 16 for everything. MUCH less of a hassle if I can have them all set for one device number. Though, I suppose some sort of MENU program ...I could incorporate it in such a way as to automate the process. Haven't tried though. Thanks Again, Steve ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 28 Wed Oct 21, 1992 P.MURDAUGH at 01:41 EDT Thank you for the additional information James. Your help is is invaluable. Steve, please let me know if you get everything working with your ram link and fourth drive. ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 29 Wed Oct 21, 1992 HOWIE-CBM at 02:50 EDT Steve, CP/M will only see drives A thru E, or 8 thru 11. (Two exceptions are drive M:, and the Quick Brown Box.) So if RL is going to be used it would have to get swapped to 8 thru 11 before the boot. I've found that using menus to launch into programs/systems, etc., is the way to go. You can set everything up the way you want it, and then forget it. And, speaking of CP/M are you able to boot into it okey? Have you tried doing it direct from RL? Howie ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 30 Wed Oct 21, 1992 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 03:11 EDT In CP/M a=8 b=9 c=10 d=11 e=virtual disk drive m=ram disk So setting it as #11 in CP/M mode is a must since #12 would be hard to access. ------------ Category 15, Topic 2 Message 31 Tue Oct 27, 1992 S.CRAIK [Steve] at 02:10 EST Hi Paul, Letting you know... Yeappie! I did it.. I DID it! It prolly wasn't the most difficult thing in the world to do but I sure made it that way. But, I did finally manage to figure out that I deeded to set the fourth drive # do 11. It was a b a hassle with the 128D. But, here goes.. I booted from the internal 1571 ..with RAMLink's default# 16, one 1581 #10 & one 1581 #11. I didn't want the 1571 in there so I because of previous set- up (RL 1581 = C:) r1517 (REU) = B: 1571 = A: Well, I went to config BTW which I did change its name from "128 CONFIG RL" to "128 CONFIGURE" (on all devices) ..and de-selected C: and re-select the 1581 (#10) de-selected A: 1571 selected RL 1581. So now I have three drives A RL1581 B r1571 C 1581 ^^^^ is device 10 From within the r1571 I "dubl. click'd" Dual_Top v3.0 went to the config menu and configure D'd bingo the "D" drive button appeared. (without that second 1581 device# at 11, I kept gett'n the ERROR msg. ..anyway the RL1581 is A and appeared there (left side) "click'd" on right side to make it the source ..press'd on the "D" button and Yeappie! the directory appeared. From there I just pressing right side ..left side to change the source and call on a different device. THEY ALL WORKED! Thanks for the TIPS, one and ALL!! New Horizon Software now offers four drive upgrades for all of your GEOS applications from Berkely Softworks. The four drive upgrades will give your applications the power to access all four of the drives in GEOS. The 4 drive upgrades are permanent modifications to the applications themselves. There are two parts to the upgrade. 1. The upgraded application will now be able to directly open files on any of the four drives by double clicking on the applications data file. Example: You can have GeoWrite in drive B and doubleclick on a GeoWrite file that is in drive D and GeoWrite will be able to open the file. 2. The upgraded application will be able to scan through all four drives using the DRIVE icon in the application's dialog boxes. Note: To make use of the four drive upgrades you must be using Dual Top 3.0 or an alternative DeskTop that fully supports four drives. We are also offering Four drive Kernal Upgrades. This upgrade gives the kernal the power to search all four drives for DualTop (or other DeskTops) when you quit an application. To order the four drive upgrades: 1. Copy all ot the applications that are to be upgraded onto a blank disk or disks. You may use 1541, 1571, or 1581 disk formats. 2. If you are ordering a Kernal upgrade you will not need to send in your system disk. Just included a request for the kernal upgrade with your disk. The price for the upgrades are $5.00 per application and $5.00 per kernal upgrade. Please specify 128 Kernal or 64 Kernal. They sell ink in 1 or 4oz. bottles in black and an assortment of colors.. Also, they sell DeskJet/PaintJet inks and kits, and BubbleJet inks and cartridges. It is a small operation, but I think it deserves support. If you are in the market for printer ink, give this guy a call! BTW, the reason this is in hardware is because to me it falls under a printer's 'umbrella'. I started this topc more for answers than questions. Hopefully we can keep providing that kind of information. If a question comes along, perhaps whoever answers it could do so in such a way that it can stand on its own without the question, so that the questions can be removed and we have pure information in this topic. ------------ Category 15, Topic 5 Message 2 Fri Jan 15, 1993 C128.JBEE (Forwarded) That is pretty good turnaround. ------------ Category 15, Topic 5 Message 3 Wed Jan 20, 1993 E.LEVINE2 [Eric] (Forwarded) I'm looking for an iterface to connect my commodore 1526 printer to my PC. Try Tenex. Their order number is 1-800-PROMPT I believe. If that is correct, post it here and we can remove the questions and supply the answer. ------------ Category 15, Topic 5 Message 5 Thu Jan 21, 1993 HOWIE-CBM (Forwarded) Ed, Yes, you are correct. The interface to use a CBM compatible printer with an IBM computer is aptly called: PC-TO-CBM Printer Port Adapter, Tenex part No. 98543 and sells for $39.95. The Tenex number is: 1-800-prompt-1 (Am I beginning to sound like a commercial or what?) My original commodore powersupply started acting up after just 2 1/2 years I like my friend's Phoenix because it allows two other peripherals to be plugged into it and keyboard and those two periphs. turned on at the same time. Is there someone who can tell me about this computer? It will start up but I dont kmow how to woek it like I can't get any games to work!I would like to have a manul to work the computer. ------------ Category 15, Topic 5 Message 16 Mon Dec 05, 1994 D.TUOMI [Doctor] at 02:39 EST The 8032 is a Commodore 8-bit computer running on the 6502 processor at 1mhz. It has 32k of main memory, expandable to 96k. It has an 80 column onochrome display. When the machine starts up it dumps you into the BASIC v4.0 programming language. All communication with the computer is conducted through BASIC programming commands, either as a program, or directly. For example, to get a directory from the disk drive that is number 0 you would enter "DIRECTORYD0." The computer was manufactured from 1982 through 1984, there are various programs available for it, but they must be able to run on the PET series computers. I hope it helps, its a little cursory, but might get you thinking in the right direction about this machine. The 8032 is a machine my neighbor got at a yard sale for his son, and they have no manual or anything to help them with it. We tried to contact the local Commodore Users Group, but it looks like they've shut down. This is wonderful. I really appreciate your help. I'll print out what you've written, and give it to my neigbor. I hope you are willing to answer a few more questions, because there will surely be some. Nate ------------ Category 15, Topic 5 Message 22 Thu Dec 08, 1994 D.TUOMI [Doctor] at 01:26 EST Normally disk is access by typeing in commands to the drive. To load programs on a PET you type: DLOAD "program",U8,D0 This will load a program called "program" off of the disk drive that is numbered "0." To save programs you would enter: DSAVE "program",U8,D0 THis will save a program called "program" onto disk drive numbered "0." You can use the disk drive that is number "1" by changing the number after the "D." For example: DLOAD "program",U8,D1 This would load a program called "program" from the drive numbered "1." Also to fetch a directory from the disk type: DIRECTORYD0 For drive numbered "0." And: DIRECTORYD1 For drive numbered "1." Before you can use a brand new disk you have to format it. That will erase whatever was on the disk before and make it ready for you to use. To do this operation on a PET you would type: HEADER "diskname",ID,U8,D0 This would format a disk, and call it "diskname" with an ID of "ID" on the "0" drive. Probably the best way to get software for the machine is to try and get ahold of TPUG. They're one of the largest Commodore User groups around. They're difficult to get a hold of, so you can also talk to my user group which is: Civic 64/128 of Ventura County, California P.O. I know Albert will appreciate this. By "which disk drive came with the PET" I believe you mean what size? I've not seen his machine, but Albert said he has two 5.25 drives. Is that what you need? Also, Albert said he DOES have some disks, but does not know what is on them because he didn't know the command to operate the disk drive. Before we talk about you sending something, let's find out if the DLOAD commands work for him, and if so, he may find he has what he needs on the disks. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. I'm at this time looking for a manual at the used book stores, and really do have hopes of finding one, one of these days. With your help, however, it's just possible he won't even need that! Again, thanks. Albert may be back on here this evening. Have a wonderful day! ------------ Category 15, Topic 5 Message 24 Fri Dec 09, 1994 D.TUOMI [Doctor] at 02:16 EST There is still losts of support for the machine, particularly in Canada. Tim.. I live in Riverside, Ca. I am sure if you look hard enough you will find repair services for any computer platform. The only question I would have about professional repairs are why spend the labor charges, which would exceed the actual value of the C64. Let's face it, a stock 64 is worth tops around $25 (no powersupply). It would cost that much to have someone to open the case and tell you what the problem *may* be. If I was you I would keep my eyes open for used 64 units as spares. Buy these and stack em in the closet for future use.. Or buy them from users on the Genie or Fido when the price is right. Junk stores (salvation army/ thrift store) *anywhere* usually have all sorts of thrown out goodies that are valuable to us, but not to anybody else. The prices are ususally REAL good then. Prices I have paid for stuff recently is $7 for a working 128, $4 for a 128D keyboard, Okidata 120 (commodore ready) $9.00, 1541 $7. Of course you do take the risk that the stuff you buy is JUNK (and you usually can't return the stuff), but at these prices it is worth the cost. Bob :) ------------ Category 15, Topic 5 Message 30 Wed Dec 14, 1994 D.PHELPS1 [Tim Phelps] at 21:10 EST I'm not sure if I mentioned it in my prior message but this is about my 1541 disk drive. The best thing to do is buy a used C-128D, maybe a flat C-128 with the 64K VDC RAM and the newer ROMS. Earl Harvey (1-307-745-7077) might have some new C-128Ds left in stock.
