As you said, it would sometimes work with the Volks module but didn't do anything with the 1660 modem module ( or the 1650 ). This was using the pulse dial option ( I havl long since lost track of the cable setup to connect the audio from the monitor back to the modem for tone dialing ). I have a phone next to my computer setup, so I dialed a BBS manualy with the phone and it did comnnect and function then. I guess there IS a bug in the dial portion of the 1660 Nova module. I have no idea if there is a fix for it, so unless someone knows of one, I would suggest trying some other term ( I tried Fritzterm and an older version of Terminal 1 with the 1660 connected and they worked fine ). Of course you could always resort to the Common Sence term that came with the modem. Also, Wizard now supports the 1660 and this would work well with GEnie. If your budget can afford it, I would suggest upgrading your modem to a Hayes compatable 1200 baud unit. I'm not sure if they still have any, but RUN Magazine was selling the 1670 ( CBM 1200 baud, Hayes compatable that plugs into the user port modem ) for less than I originally payed for my 1660. Common sense is a great piece of software compared to most programs that I have seen in the public domain...just wish it had more features! It works without a hitch! I would suggest doing a search on the keyword MAC. This will show the short description of all of these 64 viewers ( along with any MacPaint related files ). From there you can view the long descriptions by selecting the files you think might want to check out for a download. If it looks right, then just continue with the downloading process. Otherwise just press return to skip and try another. The one thing common to all the 64 viewers is that they can only display a 320 * 200 pixel portion of the macpaint at a time and you have to scroll a viewing window over the image. There is one viewer though that can display a reduced resolution image so you can have an idea of what the entire MacPaint looks like. ------------ ************ Topic 15 Tue Jun 11, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 20:41 EDT Sub: Shiver me timbers! where is the eye patch? 8 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 2, Topic 15 Message 8 Fri Jul 12, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 19:38 EDT Sounds like you are missing out on a BIG bill. Otherwise they aren't worth using. I suppose if you are researching a logo for a national company the $1500 is well spent. ZCPR 3.4 (available in the Z3Plus package for the C128) has a list of features that reads like a wish list for MS-DOS! I program mostly, and CP/M is the key to 'standard' implementations of major programming languages. Particularly I like C, and MIX-C is straight-up K & R C. Since Copps! Since CP/M is disk intensive (like IBM) I really recomend a person come up with a Ram expander. Nice thing about CP/M, it will use any REU, even a 128K size! Many IBM programs started in CP/M: Dbase, Grammatik, V- oops, hit the return again V-edit, TurboPascal, and others. Supercalc2 calls in lotus files (saved as a dif file from lotus), allowing your C128 to extend it's range so to speak. Learning Z80 assembler is something I'm starting to nose into now. The Z80 chip itself has 40% more instructions the 8086 chip. And, with more registers, including 16-bit paired registered, its going to be fun learning! It appears (though I admit novice status at comparing CPU's) that the Z80 is a much more powerful chip than the 8502. The Z80 is the CPU of choice for many imbedded control applecations in industry, so it's not like you are learning a dinosaur chip/language. It is {also used very much as an intellegent (that *would* be the word I misspell :) ) hard disk controller. in IBM's etc. Z80's and compatible chips (like hitachi's hd64180 ) can be had in clock speeds up to 13-something megahertz. I have a Kaypro that runs at 7 megahertz- -and with a 2 meg ramdisk in that one, she fairly flies! The reason I mentioned all that Z80 stuff was to say that I learned CP/M on my trusty 128, and the time spent has been very useful in other computer- related pursuits. Let us know if you get stuck! Howie ------------ Category 4, Topic 33 Message 3 Sun Jul 14, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 01:27 EDT With (4) serial devices (and probably a printer) you are probably losing the signal and getting a time out error. Especially if you are using burst mode and the software doesn't try more than once or twice for a read. Why not take one device and serial cord out of the chain and see if the problem disappears. Try moving the cables and devices around. Also, if you have a modem or printer turned off this can also freeze up the serial buss, especially with all those devices! (nothing wrong with all that attached - most people would be jealous;) It would be a weak chip too, though I suspect its from all that serial cord! ------------ Category 4, Topic 33 Message 4 Sun Jul 14, 1991 AMFORD at 10:20 CDT The chip was probably the CIA chip, right? There really is no reason for anything not to be powered on. If peripherals are off, they can cause probs. I'm don't know why, but I've always found it best to have all the peripherals turned on first, and then the computer turned on last. Not sure, however, if the serial bus is as delicate as you make it out to be. I've got 5 drives, then a twenty foot run of cable going to a printer. (It used to go to two printers, but I'm back to using one now.) Haven't had any probs with this set-up. You might try cleaning ALL the contacts on the serial bus's connections. Often a bit of 'crud' or whatever you call it forms on the contacts and prevents signals from coming thru. I've found regular rubbing alcohol on a rag does fine for this. I suppose these are things that should be a part of routine preventative maintenance. However few poeple do this, including myself, until a prob appears... One of the problems with the WD1770 was the "device not present" error. If you have the WD1772(?) control everything should be okay. My first thought would be the cords though as that is the cheapest fix and running the 1581 test program to determine if your problem might be the 1581 controller, jumper, or bad ground on pin#10 of the controller. ------------ ************ Topic 34 Fri Jul 12, 1991 L.HUFFMAN at 23:23 EDT Sub: SFD1001 on C128D & SX64 Does anyone know how to connect an SFD1001 to a C128D and/or SX64? 6 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 4, Topic 34 Message 1 Fri Jul 12, 1991 L.HUFFMAN at 23:30 EDT I know how to connect the IEEE interface to a C64 but I can't figure out which resistor to connect to on a SX64 oor a C128D. I believe the Skyles rom/cable setup is the fastest for the C128. I could be wrong on all this as the only thing I ever used was the "e-link" that hooked it up directly through the serial cord. For those, you have to either call the support bbs or wait for the files to filter out to the bbses from there. Try calling around in your local area code and seeing if there is a FIDOnet board. That's the same prob I encountered in trying to get Digital's Pocket programs to run from RL. With the Pockets, Maverick/RamBoard can make exact duplicates, so I am told, that includes the heavy copy protection. This would let me copy them over onto RL. But from what I hear, that's as far as I could get, since the copy protection uses the drive's ram for its protection scheme, and RL has no drive ram. But I digress... I'll give Desterm a tryout here, and see if I get anything different. It'll be about a week before I get the chance, since right after this, I'm pulling the plug on RL, so it can be packed, and sent in for some retro-fitting. As soon as I get it back I'll try out Des, but if Des is looking for drive ram, it probably will need some re-writes before running. From what I've heard about Des, version 2 is still the most recent public release, altho later version numbers are in beta testing, now. I have no info on what changes there are in the test versions, since beta testers are sworn to secrecy on the penalty of death if they say anything, so they are a pretty quiet bunch. :) Howie ------------ ************ Topic 9 Thu Jun 20, 1991 MIKE.DUNCAN at 23:17 EDT Sub: In search of SuperBase128 v3 Looking for a new or used copy of SuperBase 128 v3 4 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 10, Topic 9 Message 4 Fri Jul 12, 1991 C128.JBEE [* Sysop *] at 19:45 EDT Yes, you never know! I am currently trying to sell the last of my Commodore 64 supplies. I have a Commodore 1670 1200 baud modem and a Melodian musical keyboard. Included with the keyboard is the Conductor software driver disk and a music tutor disk. The Conductor has many features including three note polyphonic recording, built-in metronome, many built-in instruments, an instrument creation utility, and the ability to do some creative track recording (i.e. record on track two while playng back tracks one and three). The disk also contains many example songs to listen to or play along with! The keyboard requires no extra power supply since it'll plug directly into your 64! Both the modem and the keyboard are in good shape and they come with their original instructions! As for the prices, no reasonable offer will be refused. Make me an offer and it's yours! Of course, I am willing to ship these items COD. On the Amiga side I think there is a PD/shareware program called Go64. I don't know if it supports the 1581. What I used was a program by Readysoft called Emulator64. Does a lousy job on the emulation and you certainly won't be running anything but the simpliest C64 programs with it but the file transfer software is great with the cable. You can read and write 1581 disks on the Amiga and transfer files back and forth that way. Or you can hook up a serial drive with the supplied cable to the Amiga and transfer the files right from the drive. Works great with the CMD HD! ------------ ************ Topic 45 Tue Jul 16, 1991 R.KNOP1 [Rob Knop] at 23:51 PDT Sub: Repair manuals wanted Advice and used books sought. 2 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 10, Topic 45 Message 1 Tue Jul 16, 1991 R.KNOP1 [Rob Knop] at 23:53 PDT I would be interested in obtaining books about testing and repairing Commodore 8 bit hardware. I am one, they are many :D I did have this once long ago (about two years) and I know it was well recieved. I was just worried about "sullying" the TC128 image so to speak. Because of the positive feedback so far I think I will go for it :) Just a matter of procedure and rules :) re:disks I give out so many "freebies" to people I will use them for that. Whenever I have the urge or time I threw in free disks. I also use them as "bribes" for Euro demos and PD trades. Anyways, from experience the disks you get are usually the ugliest, dirtist, , and relabeled nightmares you could ask to be sent ;) If I recieved a request from a school with C= equipment and a PO to pay UPS shipping with a list of thier equipment freebies of some sort would be forthcoming. Here's a thought: Move the 64's screen memory to 32768 ($8000), and the start of Basic to 1025 ($0401) like it is on the PET. Load the program, then save it, and bingo, instant conversion (er, as close to instant as the '41 will allow). A program to reconfigure the 64 like that appeared in Mapping the 64. ------------ Category 21, Topic 6 Message 10 Sat Jul 13, 1991 VOYAGER-1 [Gary V] at 11:49 EDT The 64 and 128 operating systems ( as well as the +/4 ) are designed to allow for relocatable basic program loads and will automatically adjust the line link values as the file is being loaded. It does this on files that are not specified as absolute load with the ,1 command for the 64 or the BLOAD with the 128. The PET's do not have this feature as part of their operating system and everything is loaded as saved. The method of changing the memory arrangement on the 64 and re-saving the file is the way I reccomended earlyer in this thread. The short ( couple of lines ) program that I uploaded a while back does as you said - raises screen memory, drops the start of basic and resets the basic pointers to this new arrangement with a NEW command. This works great for a few conversions here and there, but I'm sure it would become tiresome if you had a hundred or so files to convert. Any information about various techniques for speeding up disk access should go here. 3 message(s) total. ************ ------------ Category 21, Topic 18 Message 3 Fri Jul 12, 1991 R.FARQUHAR1 at 20:55 CDT One other speed factor is sector interleave, IF your fastloader can keep up with the lower interleave. One way to illustrate this is to get a 1541- formatted disk and load stuff from it, making note of the load times. Then, copy to a true 1571-formatted disk, using a sector skew of 5. Repeat the experiment. You'll be shocked. That, plus the 8K buffer, is the reason the '81 is so much faster than the 41/71 (the '81's interleave is 1). ------------ that's all folks!
