Directions for disassembly of the Commodore 1541 Disk Drive. Written By: Digital.Doc 1. Be sure the unit is shut off and the power cable is disconnected. 2. Disconnect the serial bus cable(s) from the back of the unit. 3. Turn the unit upside down. 4. Remove the four screws set into the bottom of the unit. 5. Holding the top and bottom of the case together, turn the unit right side up. 6. Gently lift the top of the case from the unit and set it aside. 7. Locate and remove the six screws holding the frame assembly to the bottom of the case. 8. Disconnect the plug on the left side which leads to the green LED on the front of the case. 9. Gently lift the frame assembly from the bottom half of the case, and set the bottom half of the case aside. ******************************************************************************* * * * Warning: When removed from it's case, the Disk Drive unit is EXTREMELY * * FRAGILE! Handle with Caution to avoid damaging the unit! * * * ******************************************************************************* 10. Locate and remove the two screws on the left side of the unit which secure the shield over the circuit board. 11. Lift the left side of the shield up to release the dimples on the right side and remove the shield. 12. Locate and remove the five screws around the outer edges of the circuit board which hold the circuit board to the frame. 13. Locate and remove the two screws on the right side which thread into the heat sink near the back right side of the circuit board. 14. Mark and disconnect the power connector on the right rear of the circuit board. 15. Mark and disconnect the remaining connectors along the left edge of the circuit board. 16. Gently lift the circuit board from the frame and set it aside. 17. Locate and remove the two screws on the left side of the drive mechanical assembly which attach it to the frame. 18. Locate and remove the two screws on the right side of the drive mechanical assembly which attach it to the frame. 19. Lift the mechanical assembly slightly and bring it forward out of the frame. WARNING! disassembly, modify, or repair at your own risk! You will void the Warranty by opening the unit's case.
